Use Residential Wind Power To Cut Your Home Energy Bills

Let's face it - some of our natural resources are running out. Oil prices are going through the roof, and it isn't just impacting on car owners; Home energy bills are creeping up too. One way we can offset these costs is to consider residential wind power for generating some of the energy we use at home.

Advantages of Generating Your Own Power

When people think of alternative energy, the first thing many will think of is solar power, but residential wind power is fast catching up. Here are a few of the advantages of installing your own wind powered generator
  • Despite the initial investment, your turbine will pay for itself in a relatively short amount of time with the monthly savings you make by not having to pay the power company
  • Fluctuating energy bills will be a thing of the past, and in winter (when you normally expect high bills), the increased winds will help power the extra equipment you have plugged in!
  • Wind power is a "simple" technology. There is very little that can go wrong with the equipment compared to other alternative energy sources

Did You Know...

Wind power has been used for many years to power national electricity grids all over the United States, as well as many parts of Europe. But did you realize many rural communities have had their electricity generated by wind power for decades longer!

Types of Wind Power Generators

There are two types of mainstream wind power generators available for use in residential areas: Windmills and wind turbines.

Windmills are the oldest type of wind power generators, and were first found around Europe. Their original use was to drive the mechanism used to turn grinding stones for the production of flour (hence the "mill" in windmill!). They work by harnessing the breeze in large sails, which turn the gears and mechanism. This was later adapted to turn the generators to produce an electric current.

Wind turbines are the newest way of producing power from the wind. Although they are based upon similar concepts as their older cousins, they have the capacity to generate much more power, so can be used for higher demanding communities or households. Rather than having "sails", wind turbines use what looks like an aircraft propeller to turn the generators in order to produce electricity.

What Is Stopping You From Using Wind Power?

Most people will agree that wind power is a cheap and renewable source of home energy, so what is stopping you from taking the plunge?
