Residential Windmills For Electricity

From Skystream to Honeywell, there are some fantastic designs that use windmills for electricity. Here are some good choices to consider.

When you start utilizing wind power you're harnessing free energy and helping to reduce your carbon footprint... not to mention, you'll save a ton on your electric bill too.

You can spend thousands to harness wind power, or you can build one yourself. You should choose your wind generator by your specific electrical needs and the wind speeds you have available.

If you want to save thousands on wind power, you should consider building your own.

A Look at Skystream

The Skystream Residential Model

Skystream is estimated to put out 400 kilowatts a month at a price of $8500. The residential windmill doesn't require a battery bank and will automatically tie back into grid energy at winds less than 8 MPH. The system is rated for optimum performance at winds of 20 MPH.

The company is moving it's production to China and might be going through some management changes. If your considering purchasing a Skystream, you might want to let the company settle into it's new China location. One of the requirements for a Skystream residential windmill, is that you have at least one acre of land,

Skystream was a good wind power industry choice, whether the company survives it's relocation and keeps it's quality... time will tell.

Residential Windmills For Low Wind Speeds

Honeywell Has a Unique Residential Windmill

Honeywell has made a residential windmill that attaches to the top of your house. The design is rated at 166 kilowatts a month and operates in winds of only 4 MPH.

Honeywell has stated it will start to release it's residential windmills through ACE hardware in October of 2009. The price will be $4,500 for the unit including the grid tie in.

The design is a permanent magnet generator and the magnets are actually on the ends of the windmill blades. The stator surrounds the blades and makes up the exterior housing. This design isn't optimal for areas that have high winds, and is specifically for low wind areas. If you do have high winds, you'd obviously go with a three bladed windmill vs the multiple blade design that Honeywell has created. Still it looks pretty neat.

Yep, there is a company in California I have seen has an innovative design for residential wind generators. The community wind generators are also viable where the wind is available via hybrid type systems. Power generation is within my technical expertise from past career. Conversations helps with new ideas. Thanks.

Great lens. Never saw a generator with the magnets at the wing tips before.
