A resilient personality is best for dealing with stress and adversity.

In this economy a resilient personality is a must to keep yourself from going crazy.

Learn from the Swamp Reed

The phragmites australis is the predominant member of the plant family known as "poaceae." For the majority of us who are not botanists, we refer to this "phragmites australis" simply as "reeds." These relatively typical plants are commonly found in wet, shallow swamps and marshes. However, as average and "normal" as these plants appear to be, they possess an element that every human would do well to learn from.

What is this element? It's the element of resilience.

The reed displays the exact definition of resilience. The reed bends and bows with the intense gust of wind, but maintains its sure footing. As soon as the wind falters, it springs back to its healthy upright position, more alive and thriving then ever before.

Resilience is the ability to readily return to an original shape after misfortune, illness, or hardship; and the ability to cope with changes in your life.

When "Things" Just Go Wrong

Have you ever found yourself waking up on the "wrong" side of your bed? Have you ever found everything to be moving the opposite direction of the direction you wanted things to be heading? Well, you are the reed here, bending and blowing in the intense gusts of life. How is your ability to cope in these circumstances? Is your day ruined?

Whether or not your day will be ruined depends on one thing. Resilience. For some people, the day was doomed from the moment the person jumped from bed. However, a resilient person would simply bend with the wind, holding to his foundation, and focusing on what really matters in life. Like the reed, this resilient person would adjust to the surrounding circumstances enabling him to move ahead and thrive in life no matter the current circumstances.

The Main Three Elements of a Resilient Person!

This article will focus on the three elements a resilient person is careful to maintain in his life. Specifically, we will discuss the maintenance of our spiritual well being, the maintenance of our mental well being, and the maintenance of our bodily well being.

1. Tending to Our Spiritual Well being

1. Tending to our spiritual well being.

One of the most important things to do when tending to your spiritual well being is quite simply, to breath. This sounds like a redundant prerequisite for living, but take a moment right now to pause -- Without extending your stomach, slowly thrust your chest outward as you take the deepest breath you possibly can, filling every square inch of your lungs with invigorating, spiritual air.

Take the time to commit yourself to something meaningful in life. Commit yourself to the well-being of your children, your spouse, your health, or making people happy. Be compassionate to people. No matter how bad your day is going, caring about the countless miserable souls in life who are worse off than you will help you to keep your life in perspective.

2. Tend to Your Mental Well-being

2. Tend to your mental well-being

Is your day organized? What are you hoping to accomplish today? Make sure to organize your day so that the important things you must attended to are accomplished early in the day while you are still fresh. Getting the tedious tasks accomplished early in your day will ensure that you are not drained by the end of the day.

Take time to be peaceful. Your tasks can easily blind you due to your lack of "life," or other things around you that you should be aware of. Don't get so busy that you ignore what's going on around you, as that will have unwelcome consequences.

Make room in your schedule to allow for the unforeseen happenings in your day. Many things in your day may take significantly longer than you planned, so making time for these larger tasks will help you stay on schedule, and will help you remain mentally calm.

3. Tend to Your Bodily Well being

3. Tend to your bodily well being.

Make sure to achieve balance in your life. Balance work with recreation. If your job requires you to sit behind a desk answering phones all day, take time to partake in something active after work. If your job requires you to be active, take time after work to relax.

Make sure to give your body frequent breaks during the day. Stretch frequently. If you have ben staring at a computer for several hours, give your eyes a break by focusing at a point far away for a few minutes to relax your eyes.

"Worms will not eat living wood where the vital sap is flowing:
Rust will not hinder the opening of a gate when hinges are used each day;
Movement gives health and life.
Stagnation brings disease and death."

-proverb in traditional Chinese Medicine

Fuel your body. Obviously, your body need food and water to function. When you awake in the morning, you are starting off your day on a 8-10 hour fast. You're starved and dehydrated. Make sure not to get busy with something without eating anything. Not only is this not healthy, but you will also suddenly find yourself famished, and will spend the rest of the day lounging on a couch eating junk food.

So there we have it. Tending to your spiritual, mental, and bodily well being. Balance these three things in your life to ensure that you will be able to effectively thrive and lead a resourceful life no matter the curve balls thrown your way.

Watch your actions, for they become habits.

Laughing - Find the Humor

If you can find the way to start laughing, you are well on your way to bouncing back from a stressful, negative situation.

Finding humor in stressful situations doesn't mean you're in denial.

Humor is a helpful coping mechanism.

If you can't find any humor in a situation, I think of this movie. Forrest Gump

Yes, When I want away from a situation I say to myself, "Run, Forrest!---Run!!!"

I start laughing and see things in a new perspective.

Try it yourself and let me know if it works for you as well.

As you expressed with the reed analogy, I think we all "struggle" far more than we need to. Paddling upstream is hard work.
