It's trendy, hot, beautiful and available in many different designs!
It truly boggles the mind just how many gorgeous designer items there are that are resin-based. Probably my first introduction to resin jewelry was about three years ago when I started selling Lalo Orna, Made in Bulgaria resin jewelry and accessories.
If you're not yet familiar with resin, it's now trendy, hot, beautiful and available in many different designs! Who knew resin in jewelry could be so desirable?
When I was searching my images for just one to show here, it was a daunting task. How can ONE picture show the beauty of resin? Well, you'll just have to read on. Hope you enjoy!
Quick, how do you feel about resin jewelry?
What is resin anyway?
According to that master resource, Wikipedia ...
Resin, not to be confused with rosin, is a hydrocarbon secretion of many plants, particularly coniferous trees. It is valued for its chemical constituents and uses, such as varnishes and adhesives, as an important source of raw materials for organic synthesis, or for incense and perfume. Fossilized resins are the source of amber.
The term is also used for synthetic substances of similar properties. Resins have a very long history and are mentioned by both ancient Greek Theophrastus and ancient Roman Pliny the Elder, especially as the forms known as frankincense and myrrh. They were highly prized substances used for many purposes, especially perfumery and as incense in religious rites.
The chemistry behind resin ...
When I read the Wikipedia detailed information for the "chemistry" behind organic resin, I got a little excited. Why you ask? Well, way back in my past, I actually worked with a company whose feedstock was crude sulfate turpentine, producing chemicals that are alpha-pinene and beta-pinene based! So, I get the following ...Technically speaking, The resin produced by most plants is a viscous liquid, typically composed mainly of volatile fluid terpenes, with lesser components of dissolved non-volatile solids which make resin thick and sticky. The most common terpenes in resin are the bicyclic terpenes alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, delta-3 carene and sabinene, the monocyclic terpenes limonene and terpinolene, and smaller amounts of the tricyclic sesquiterpenes longifolene, caryophyllene and delta-cadinene. Some resins also contain a high proportion of resin acids. The individual components of resin can be separated by fractional distillation.
Resin is a hydrocarbon secretion of many plants, particularly coniferous trees, valued for its chemical constituents and uses such as varnishes and adhesives.
Additionally, there are synthetic resins which are materials with similar properties to natural resins-viscous liquids capable of hardening.
The intent of my lens is not to get too technical with the chemistry behind resin as it applies to its use in jewelry. What I've found is that you'll find the word "resin" sometimes used to describe some jewelry that may also be either "acrylic," or "celluloid," or "lucite," or "plastic," or "plexiglass," or really "resin" in composition.
The resin jewelry of Emma Caton
www.emmacaton.com
To know me is to know that I love fine art jewelry that is handcrafted; and I love butterfly-shaped jewelry! When I spotted this beautiful piece of jewelry, I knew I wanted to feature it in my lens.Emma Caton's website is a site of contemporary hand cast resin jewellery and sculpture by the artist Emma Caton. Her sculptures and jewellery consist of familiarity glorified and the ephemeral held captive in clear casting resin.
The butterfly wings shimmer much like that of mother of pearl yet also have elements of tortoisehell, a substance now illegal to use but which earthly hues compliment the skin tones. Trained as a sculptor, the tactile quality of the pieces is of paramount importance, becoming objects to explore via touch and sight.

Oh, BTW, I love the offerings of www.cristaluna.com!
This is a wonderful lens. Great work! I make resin jewelry (check my lens for examples) and I think resin is the best material on Earth to work with!
Posted September 12, 2008
I am quite excited to find this lens. I have been designing and creating mixed metal and resin art jewelry for about 6yrs now. Initially my clients were skeptical, but the designs and light weight convinced them more than the material. I lean towards large dramatic pieces and resin keeps them light, strong and enables me to custom pigment each piece to current fashion colors as well as a clients outfit. My work has evolved over the years as have my techniques and my love of the medium has only become stronger. For those interested, I do wholesale some of my pieces to boutiques, galleries & specialty shops. My work can be seen at www.dugdesigns.etsy.com
