Resin Designs in Jewelry

When I read the Wikipedia detailed information for the "chemistry" behind organic resin, I got a little excited. Why you ask? Well, way back in my past, I actually worked with a company whose feedstock was crude sulfate turpentine, producing chemicals that are alpha-pinene and beta-pinene based! So, I get the following ...

Technically speaking, The resin produced by most plants is a viscous liquid, typically composed mainly of volatile fluid terpenes, with lesser components of dissolved non-volatile solids which make resin thick and sticky. The most common terpenes in resin are the bicyclic terpenes alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, delta-3 carene and sabinene, the monocyclic terpenes limonene and terpinolene, and smaller amounts of the tricyclic sesquiterpenes longifolene, caryophyllene and delta-cadinene. Some resins also contain a high proportion of resin acids. The individual components of resin can be separated by fractional distillation.

Resin is a hydrocarbon secretion of many plants, particularly coniferous trees, valued for its chemical constituents and uses such as varnishes and adhesives.

Additionally, there are synthetic resins which are materials with similar properties to natural resins-viscous liquids capable of hardening.

The intent of my lens is not to get too technical with the chemistry behind resin as it applies to its use in jewelry. What I've found is that you'll find the word "resin" sometimes used to describe some jewelry that may also be either "acrylic," or "celluloid," or "lucite," or "plastic," or "plexiglass," or really "resin" in composition.

To know me is to know that I love fine art jewelry that is handcrafted; and I love butterfly-shaped jewelry! When I spotted this beautiful piece of jewelry, I knew I wanted to feature it in my lens.

Emma Caton's website is a site of contemporary hand cast resin jewellery and sculpture by the artist Emma Caton. Her sculptures and jewellery consist of familiarity glorified and the ephemeral held captive in clear casting resin.

The butterfly wings shimmer much like that of mother of pearl yet also have elements of tortoisehell, a substance now illegal to use but which earthly hues compliment the skin tones. Trained as a sculptor, the tactile quality of the pieces is of paramount importance, becoming objects to explore via touch and sight.

Ah, the "queen" of black and white resin jewelry is undoubtedly the Jackie Brazil brand by Sobral.

Sobral, a Brazilian designer, has a range of resin jewelry that is so totally unique. Each piece is carefully produced from resin and hand-polished. This particular wide cuff bangle is from the Liquorice collection.

You'll find that the Jackie Brazil brand has a range of enticing colors and shapes in resin jewelry; not just black and white.

I adore black and white resin jewelry. I think this one is really hot!

What a knockout! Viktoria Hayman's chunky jewelry is very appealing for its translucence quality and wonderful faceting. When you hear how affordable this bangle is, you'll probably buy a few!

The last time I checked, I saw this bangle in pink, orange, teal, and gold. The Viktoria Hayman line also carries clear resin or lucite jewelry.
