"How to Write a Damn Good Novel: A step-by-step no-nonsense guide to Dramatic Storytelling"

(and believe me, this is the real title of the book.)

The author, James N. Frey, is a very-well known American author and also a teacher of writing workshops. His experience as a teacher really stands out in both of his manuals.

In "How to Write a Damn Good Novel I", he does a great job of narrowing down the structure of a good novel to its essentials in a light, engaging, and very easy-to-read tone.

The book takes you through the stages of writing a book from coming up with a premise, building great characters, developing conflict to how to handle your first rewrite.

He doesn't teach you how to write; he simply teaches how to construct a story that will be interesting and saleable, and how to take a good story that you've written and find its flaws. It is both invaluable and entertaining.

And if you enjoyed the 1st book in the series, then I would recommend buying its sequel "How to Write a Damn Good Novel II". It provides advanced techniques for dramatic storytelling. Frey shows the writer how to build suspense and create more interesting characters. He teaches the writer how to avoid common writing traps.

With this combination, you should be on the right track of finishing your novel wityh satisfaction.

Stephen King's "On Writing"

On Writing

Amazon Price: $27.00 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

This is the most popular and highly recommended book on writing thus far.

The book is split into two parts: a memoir and a writing manual. And no matter what type of fiction you're writing, every aspiring author will find King's tips and tricks indispensable and inspiring.

This isn't a classic 'how-to' on writing, nor a book of exercises and skill drills. It is more like taking advice from a mentor, from one author to another.

This book presents King's view about writing and is straight-forward in a way that most readers will appreciate. The examples in the back of the book are extremely helpful and King uses his unique and accessible writing style to tell the reader about his own writing process. He also lays down his "rules" for success and insists on three important points: write a lot, read a lot, and be persistent.

The "Write Great Fiction" series

Now, you got in your possession a very good how-to-write manual that covers the basics, you have read it and you are now ready to write your novel.
Now it is time to go more into depth.

At this point, my advice is to read books that are more focused on a specific subject. One of the best series to do this job that I found is the "Write Great Fiction" series from the Writer's Digest collection. The titles are:

1) Plot & Structure
2) Character, Emotion & Viewpoint
3) Description & Setting
4) Dialogue
5) Revising and Self-Editing (a new addition from last year)

My personal favourite is "Plot & Structure".

Each book has been written by an accomplished author. The reviews are very good. They are clear, coherent, practical, and immensely useful to any student of the craft. The authors' approach is 'wide' because they cover several dimensions to various topics, so you should find tips and tricks specific to your writing abilities and habits.

Each volume provides an in-depth, thought-provoking look at its subject matter.

I have included below the three books I prefer.

"Techniques of the Selling Writer"

Learn from a legend in the field of writing.

Techniques of the Selling Writer

Amazon Price: $17.49 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

This book was originally published in 1965, and it is still quite in demand by writers of all kinds of fiction today.

The information he presents is solid, useful and, definitely, "timeless".

Dwight Swain, the author, reveals many intricacies of novel writing, taking you through the process and technique of creating fiction step-by-step in a practical way.

He deals mainly about conflict, writing the beginning, the middle and the end of your book, writing the climax, how to write vividly, and much more

This book is reputed to be quite long and hard to read in some places. A writer that has not read a how-to-write manual before should not read this one first, but wait after acquiring some knowledge and experience. But it is considered quite a treasure to hold if you take the time to read it. It is said to contain advice and techniques that are not available elsewhere.

Consider this book for a future purchase; the advice it contains will help you perfection your novel even more.

"Self-Editing for Fiction Writers: How to Edit Youself into Print"

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, Second Edition: How to Edit Yourself Into Print

Amazon Price: $7.90 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

The authors, Browne and King, are editors themselves and give advice based on their editorial careers. This book delivers well-organized topics in down-to-earth and tangible ways.

The most effective way to get the most out of this book is to apply its principles to something you are currently working on.

They cover several subjects such as: show and tell, characterization and exposition, point of view, interior monologue, etc. Each chapter has a checklist that you can take to your own manuscript when the time for revision has come. Each chapter also ends with instructional exercises (and unlike most manuals of this kind, this one has the answers to these exercises).

This book covers subjects more thoroughly that other manuals only cover briefly. The tips and advice given helped many authors perfection their novels and got them published.

This manual is really a classic!

This is one of the definitive reference books on style in written English. By the great acclaim I have seen on the Internet by many authors, it should be on the shelf of every author.

This book should be the starting point for all students who are learning to write or want to get published, being as much part of any author's library as a dictionary and a thesaurus.

This book will help you write in a more concise, clean and effective manner. It teaches the basics of English grammar, including sentence structure and frequently misspelled or misused words, and lessons on style, composition and clarity.

Buy it, and re-read it many times throughout the year to keep in tune.

I recommend the 4th edition, since it will be up-to-date (it was first published on 1919) and more interesting for today's authors.

A writer should not be without...

its dictionary, its thesuarus and other practical manuals!
