All about restaurant jobs

To the casual diner, it may look like a restaurant is run by a few waiters and waitresses, a bartender or two and maybe a cashier... oh, yes, and a cook, of course.  But in reality there are many people with many different responsibilities who make it possible for you to dine out.

If you ever wanted to know about the internal workings of a restaurant, a bit of a who's who, or who does what, then this is a lens for you.  This lens was made possible through the assistance of Pro Dining Job - Canada restaurant job board and employment opportunities.

Restaurant Cook Jobs

Cooks are usually the unknown factor of a restaurant as most restaurants have their kitchens located separate from dining areas. They are however one of the most integral parts of a restaurant dining experience, because no matter how well the service is, your experience will be determined on the taste of your meal. A cook's responsibility may encompass more than just preparing and cooking individual dishes and foods, they are also responsible for preparing dishes for customers with food allergies or intolerances, supervising kitchen staff, cleaning kitchen and work areas, training new staff, developing new recipes and ordering and maintaining stock.

Restaurant Chef Jobs

Not unlike a Cook, a Chef is one of the most important aspects of your dining experience since the Chef, for the most part, is responsible for planning the menu and the day to day operations of the kitchen. One of the main differences between a Chef and a Cook is certification, which they are many types for different kinds of Chefs. Some of a Chef's main responsibilities may include: planning and directing food preparation and cooking activities, estimating food and labour costs, preparing and cooking meals and specialty foods including dishes for customers with food allergies or intolerances, instructing and training cooks in preparation, planning menus, ensuring the quality of food and portions, creating new recipes, recruiting, hiring, scheduling and supervising kitchen staff. They also may be required to maintain records of food costs, consumption, sales and inventory as well as analyze operating costs and other data.

Restaurant Party Chef Jobs

For all you dessert lovers out there, you will want to send your accolades to the resident pastry cook / pastry chef of the restaurant you're attending. A pastry cook's responsibilities encompass similarities of both a chef and a cook with some of added exceptions. They may also need to consult with customers for special functions such as banquets, wedding, birthdays, etc. to plan and arrange food requirements for these functions.

Restaurant Kitchen Manager and Assistant Manager Jobs

Depending on the size of the restaurant, and the particular role of the cooks and chefs the Kitchen Manager / Assistant Manager would take on all the administrative duties such as planning and directing food preparation and cooking activities, estimating food and labour costs, instructing and training cooks in preparation, planning menus, ensuring the quality of food and portions, creating new recipes, recruiting, hiring, scheduling and supervising kitchen staff. They also may be required to maintain records of food costs, consumption, sales and inventory as well as analyze operating costs and other data. However the may also have a dual job as a Chef or Cook.

A dishwasher position in a restaurant is usually an entry-level job for those who are interested in cooking.

Resaturant General manager and Assistant Manager Jobs

The General Manager and Assistant Manager run the show. It is ultimately their responsibility for all the functions of a restaurant from opening to closing. They are responsible for the daily planning, organization, direction, control and evaluation of all restaurant operations. Other responsibilities include the recruitment, management, supervision, scheduling and development of all staff. Resaturant bartender Jobs

The bartender needs no introduction, as they are usually located behind a bar serving up the beer, wine and cocktails that you have ordered. Depending on the type of restaurant, the bar area may be one with a social functionality in mind, or purely utilitarian. Regardless of the function of the bar, the bartender will encompass the same set of responsibilities, which may include the daily organization, set up, cleaning, sanitizing and maintaining of the bar. They must also be able to inform customers regarding contents of cocktails or other drinks, advise on wine selections, and posses a high level of customer service. A server's responsibilities include serving food and beverages, presenting bills and accepting payments.
