SUSHMA VEERA gets an education on teas when she visits The Tea Republic.
For many, a nicely brewed cup of tea in the morning helps you to get going for the rest of the day.
If you are an avid tea lover, then there is a place in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur you would want to check out.
The Tea Republic is the brainchild of a tea lover and her college mate. Located in the popular expat enclave of Bangsar Shopping Centre, this cafe, often called TTR for short, is an oasis for tea drinkers.
Graced by a outdoor balcony, the rest of the outlet is simply designed, exuding a homely yet contemporary feel. There are wooden tables and fluffed up cushions in white, brown and orange on the chairs. Those who prefer sitting outdoors enjoy the same comforts, plus the breeze.
The tea room feel is everywhere, look out for the unique custom-made teacups and teapot pendant lighting, and also tea cup-and-saucer plant pots. A perfect spot to enjoy pots of tea and scrumptious snacks. TTR is founded by interior designer Sumita J. Singam and television commercial producer Fabian W. Joseph and opened its doors last December.
"The idea took form during conversations years ago, during our college days. I wanted to open up a nice place to hang out. A tea lounge is a good start," says Sumita, who dreams of having a resort by the sea someday.
Sumita has been a tea lover since she was a child, but partner Fabian is a tea lover by default. Sadly, Fabian could not drop by that day due to work commitment.
The tea lounge can accommodate 35 customers at any one time. "We believe there is a tea out there for everyone. Here at TTR, we offer a variety of teas, and the range is updated continuously," says Sumitha.
There are 31 options, from black, green, red to flavoured, from stick to blooms, from oolong to herbal and blends, from across the globe.
Sumita says their selection of teas are sourced from France, Italy, Australia, Japan and the UK. Among the choices are: Stick tea with choices of darjeeling, Ceylon Earl Grey, spicy pepper tea, Jing (Jasmine silver needle, organic bohea lapsang); Organic Koala Tea (Rejuvenate, dreamtime); Lupicia (Momo, Sencha Matsuri) and tea blossoms.
Then, there are also the in-house specialities such as masala tea and iced black or green tea.
"We give people an experience they'll want to come back for. We also have light eats such as croissants, cup cakes and sandwiches," says Sumita.
In line with the Chinese New Year spirit, TTR is also having a limited edition tea called the Rooibos Cream Orange tea.
"The Rooibos tea is also known as red tea. The uplifting blend is a celebratory drink, to be enjoyed without restraint. It is also theine free."
She adds that this is a full-bodied tea with creamy and delicate vanilla notes, further enhanced with aromatic orange peel.
Certain tea blends are best taken at suitable times. For example, the Organic Bohea Lapsang is a smokey tea which leaves an impression of almost peaty warmth. It is great on cold or rainy days. The Tropicalitea range, on the other hand, is refreshing on hot and humid days.
Another blend that is a must-try is Blooming Richness. It is certainly a pretty sight - the bright flowers pop into full blooms in your cup of hot water. Blooming Richness is a bouquet of green tea, marigold, jasmine and globe amaranth, and a spectacular vision unfolds as the globe amaranth flower is perched upon a string of jasmine flowers that arise from within high grade green tea leaves.
"Our caramel tea and Ceylon Earl Grey are also favourites," she says.
The caramel is a flavoured blend of China and Ceylon tea, with an intense taste of caramel and toffee. Brewed up to five minutes, the Ceylon Earl Grey has the traditional Earl Grey flavour with Ceylon Tea underlining the taste of delicate flavours of bergamot oil.
TTR also offers Cambric tea, a milky brew with a hint of tea, perfect for children. "This tea is named after the white Cambric linen that was made in the city of Cambric in France. It is also known as Nursery Tea," explains Sumitha.
The Tea Republic is a cool place to have small gatherings. Teas are priced between RM6.90 a cup to RM21.50 per pot.

THIS 24-hour joint is famed for its nasi biryani and almond milk, writes C.K. LAM.
LOCATED a stone's throw away from Little India is Restoran Kapitan. This place has been delighting locals and foreigners alike for many years with its claypot biryani, naan bread and tandoori dishes. It has a fairly extensive menu that ranges from a choice of breads to rice dishes and western fare such as chicken chop and pizza.
Chicken tandoori has a lovely shade of red. The freshly-prepared chicken is not only juicy but also oozes with the sweetness of charred aroma.
Here, it is served with garlic naan, dhal curry, chilli sauce, mint sauce, coleslaw and raw onions. The mint sauce is prepared according to a traditional Indian recipe!
Kapitan is also famed for its signature dish, claypot nasi biryani (chicken and beef). Other selections include prawns, mutton and vegetable biryani.
The rice is prepared with a variety of spices, served in a claypot and accompanied with curry gravy.
Both the marinated chicken and beef are not only flavourful but also retain their tender succulent texture.
Choice of beverages includes barley, coffee, lime syrup, iced teh tarik and almond milk. Known to the locals as badam milk, this is essentially pure cow's milk boiled with ground almond, cashew nuts and raisins.
Sugar is added and just before serving, the beverage is "pulled" like teh tarik.
There is always a steady crowd throughout the day.
Strategically located at the junction of Chulia Street and Pitt Lane, Kapitan is open 24 hours.

KUALA LUMPUR: With its dark, slick and sticky coating of smoky, sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, chef Jonathan Heng's butter tender beef short ribs is guaranteed to bring out the carnivore in you.
Five-star hotel-quality Western fare at three-star prices are the main draw at Kafe Indulge, which is run by the young enterprising chef with some help from his family.
Located at the Kuchai Business Park, a rather quiet commercial enclave away from the bustling thoroughfare of Jalan Kuchai Lama, Heng's little cafe has quickly become one of our favourite haunts since it opened last December.
Two of our perennial delights that never fail to hit the spot are the velvety smooth cream of trio field mushroom soup with garlic herb bread (RM5.90) and Caesar salad (RM11.90).
Heng uses a combination of button, oyster and shiitake mushrooms to give the creamy broth an enticingly earthy aroma.
"They're also roughly chopped to lend extra texture."
Light eaters will find the Caesar salad, made up of fresh Romaine lettuce, grilled chicken slices tossed in olive oil, crushed garlic, salt, ground black pepper, wine vinegar, fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, chopped beef bacon and crisp croutons topped with Parmesan shavings, an ample meal on its own.
For main course, my vote goes to the "Twister", a plump German-style sausage that is tightly wound into a round disc, pan-fried and served with sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) and French fries. Coming in a close second is the deliciously piquant linguini with seafood, mushroom and homemade tomato concasse.
The juicy chicken or beef burger puts the fast-food versions completely in the shade while the grilled chicken chop is perked up with either mushroom or black pepper sauce.
As a tribute to his Hainanese background, the chef proffers Mama's lamb shank, (RM21.90) which is braised until fork-tender as directed by a treasured family recipe.
Never leave Kafe Indulge without sampling the signature mille crepe cake -- a delightful treat of a stack of paper-thin French crepes spread with a luscious concoction of lightly sweetened UHT cream, mascarpone and pastry cream in between each layer.
But the most comforting news of all must be Kafe Indulge's reasonable prices.
Soup and starters range between RM5.90 and RM11.90 each while main courses are priced between RM11.90 and RM23.90. Desserts start from RM7.50.
Kafe Indulge (pork-free) is located at A-0-11 Kuchai Business Park, 2 Jalan 1/127, Off Jalan Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur. It is open daily from 11am to 10.30pm.

The Apartment Kitchen & Bar (Damansara)
Mutiara Damansara, Selangor
YOU'VE got to admit The Apartment's motto "We Want to Take You Home" is so endearing. In some ways, the motto is charmingly Malaysian.
The contemporary interior of The Apartment at the Curve, Petaling Jaya echoes that of a modern couple's habitat. Well, somewhat -- there are couches and a space characterising a balcony. Quirkily, there are shower heads sprouting out of one wall, complete with faucets and towel railings. Unluckily for diners, they are merely for show!
In sync with its interior and philosophy, both The Apartment chefs -- one at KLCC and the other at the Curve shopping malls respectively -- thrive to offer a menu that marries the East and West. For instance, salmon laksa! Intriguing, isn't it?
Nevertheless, I've opted to highlight diners' favourites -- with comforting, familiar flavours -- from its menu. So, here goes:
>> Apartment Clams are served swimming in a sauce of white wine and butter. It's a rather communal dish and quite yummy when its homemade bread is dipped into the sauce and the clams are fresh.
>> Peking Duck Crepe Rolls are served cold without the gamey flavour. I like that it's a cold dish perfect for hot afternoons. The roll feels totally light since the crepe is soft and the whole wrap is filled with refreshing herbs.
>> King Prawn Pasta is not bad although, there's a danger of the pasta drowning in the tomato-based sauce. Still, it's pleasurable enough. Avoid wearing a white shirt when bingeing on this!
>> Baked Aubergine is one of its tapas dishes but it doesn't come in tapas-size. It's basically two large round aubergines, halved, baked with cheese topping and drizzled generously with a tomato-based sauce. Yes, quite yummy.
>> Duck and Mango Salad is an amalgam of sweet, meaty and herbal freshness. Although I quite prefer it without as many mangoes, it's still a good dish for light eaters.
>> Desserts of Caramel Custard Tartlets and Peach Kiwi Parfait are both creamy and pleasantly sweet. The Parfait comes in a tall glass and can be quite a challenge to conquer. Well, order it and you'll know what I mean!
The dishes are of quite generous portions. Prices start at RM9.90++ for tapas, RM23.90++ for main courses and RM21.90++ for clam dishes. Its quick lunch menu includes soup of the day, selected main courses and a drink at RM13.90++.
So, to kickstart The Apartment experience, I've included its two simple recipes -- Baked Aubergine & Duck and Mango Salad.

Company Information
It was at the height of the Asian Financial Crisis. The country was reeling from the impact. Belts were tightened and many businessmen took conservative routes to ride the crisis over. In the midst of this turmoil, two young entrepreneurs, Tengku Rozidar and Ahmad Zakir, set up the first ever hot dog store in Sunway Pyramid, Malaysia. The rest, as they say, is history. From the first pushcart, 1901 now has grown by leaps and bounds with over 70 outlets by 2007.For Tengku Rozidar and Ahmad Zakir, 1901 is the culmination of their dream. They believe that many fellow Malaysians would like to run their own business, just like they do. Therefore they decided to set up a franchise and make it affordable. That way, people who aspire to run their own business could pursue the dream. On the other hand, the design of pushcarts and stores were reminiscent of America%u62AF hot dog stores. The approach was so successful that for a long time, many people had thought that 1901 is an American hot dog chain. For the founders, the success they have achieved is just a beginning. Now, they set their sight to soar to new heights.
