What Is RLS?

Restless Legs Syndrome, or RLS, is a condition wherein a person has the irresistible urge to move his or her body to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. RLS gives the sensation of burning, itching, or tickling to the muscles. Moving the affected body part modulates these sensations and gives temporarily relief.

This disorder can also be called the Wittmaack-Eckbom's syndrome or the Nocturnal Myoclonus. Most commonly, it is the legs that are affected, thus the name. But it can also affect the arms and torso.

The Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome

How Do You Know You Have RLS?

There is no definite diagnosis of the Restless Legs Syndrome because the subject is still too broad for any specific signs. There are several things you can look into and then confirm with a doctor whether you have RLS or not:
  • There is an urge to move the afflicted limbs, typically the lower legs or calves
  • That uncomfortable sensation increases during periods of inactivity
  • Relief is usually found in movement, such as stretching or walking
  • The symptoms of RLS are worse in the evening, especially at night when you're in bed and trying to sleep
  • You feel better and your symptoms improve when you move your legs around
  • Many people report of fatigue and exhaustion which indirectly affect their personal and professional life
  • Some people also have problems concentrating and have impaired memory
  • Cause of the leg discomfort not detected by medical tests
  • Family members sometimes have similar characteristics

Three Types of RLS

There are three types of RLS as classified by the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation:
  • Primary or Familial Type: This type is applied when RLS is found to run in a family.

  • Secondary Type: This type is when RLS occurs as a result of another condition such as pregnancy, low iron levels, or chronic disease.

  • Idiopathic Type: This type is said to occur when there is no family history of Restless legs syndrome and no known associated conditions.

There are actually many conditions that can resemble the Restless Legs Syndrome. This includes muscle diseases, joint conditions, nerve problems, and circulation difficulties. All these conditions should be considered for differential diagnosis to be sure if you have RLS or not.

The symptoms of the Restless Legs Syndrome are different for everyone. Some may be painful and more severe, and some may be moderate. But no matter the degree of the symptoms, there is still hope that it can be battled out. It might mean more research, giving more time and effort. For others, it'll mean giving up drinking or smoking and entering into exercise programs and eating healthy diet. There are many ways to treat RLS!

Battling Sleeping Disorders Like RLS

Sleeping disorders may occur because of anxiety, physical pain, or a change in lifestyle (shift work change). Environmental noise can also contribute to sleeping poorly. Medications and drugs can also be factors. Sleeping poorly will lead to sleep debt, which is the effect of not getting enough rest and sleep. Sleep debt can cause mental and physical fatigue, and may ruin your personal and professional life.

To battle sleeping disorders, it is important to understand the cause of the disorder and to understand what sort of treatments you have to take. Sleep disorders vary in nature and degree. The worst of the sleeping disorders are dyssomnias or insomnia, hypersomnia (disorders of excessive sleepiness), and parasomnias or having abnormal behaviors during sleep.

Treatments for sleeping disorders also varies, from changes in your life style to taking in different medications. There is one thing that matters when treating all sleeping disorders, though, and that is to stick to a routine for sleeping. This routine will basically cover the following tips:

  • Going to bed only when you get sleepy

  • Sleeping time and waking time should be routinary and constant

  • Don't drink alcohol, or drinks with caffeine in the evening

  • Exercise daily and improve on your physical activities

  • Take a break and relax from time to time

  • Condition your bedroom that it would be comfortable for you to sleep in (bed, room temperature, etc.)

  • Close windows, remove distractions, and don't bring in work in your bedroom to have a quiet sleep

  • Take a hot or warm bath before going to sleep

  • Eat early in the evening and don't eat too late at night

  • Take a night stroll or do some stretching exercises to relax your muscles

  • Drink warm milk or some herbal teas

  • Have a massage to get your body to relax

  • Take calcium and magnesium supplements before bedtime

  • Stick to whichever tips from the list above and perform them on a daily basis. Making them routine in your life can contribute to a routine sleep in the future.
