Resume Writing Tips and Tricks to help you write your resume.

Introduction

There are many different ways to go about writing resumes. It doesn't matter if you're a first timer, or if this is the tenth career change that you've had to send out a resume for, you can always learn new tricks and tips to improve your resume writing, and increase your chances of landing that big interview. Everyone claims to have 'secrets' and 'tricks' to resume success, but ultimately, the only way to succeed at resume writing is to craft a polished, unique resume that stands out from the crowd. As long as you take the time to ensure these elements are a part of your resume, the little tips and tricks out there can help, if used properly.

Resume Writing Tip # 1

The first trick to resume writing is to plan everything before you write your resume. Most successful resumes involve more research and planning than actual writing, so keep this in mind. Once you gather all of your information and plan out your resume writing strategy, you can very easily take a few minutes to type the information up into a beautful resume that's sure to generate interest. In your planning, you should also make sure that you consider the interests of the employer(s) that you are sending resumes to. You should direct the focus of your resume to cater to their needs, and towards what they're looking for in an employee. Utilize headlines and emphasize important points to catch their attention.

Resume Writing Tip # 2

Another great way to get your resume noticed is to remember that less REALLY is more. Although many resume writing articles and websites will tell you that resume writing should be limited to two pages, you shouldn't set a limit on your quantity. After all, it is about quality in resume writing, not quantity. However, you do need to provide direct, concise statements, while still allowing room to explain the details. Don't try to "wow" the employer with big words or pretty language, this will detract from the professionalism and overall credibility of your resume. Taking the time to highlight the important elements of your career history, education, and training, while adding the necessary details in a brief way; don't bother including details and/or information that's irrelevant.

Resume Writing Tip # 3

The focus of quality resume writing should be on what you've achieved and accomplished, not on what your job duties were supposed to be. Many people waste valuable time and space on their resumes describing their duties and don't emphasize what they actually did. You need to use your resume space properly, by only filling it with things that matter to the prospective employer. Also, you need to focus on the positive aspects of your work history, and attempt to minimalize any negative aspects. It would be nice to simply not list the negative elements at all, but things such as reasons for leaving a job need to be on a resume. They just don't need to be emphasized. Instead, draw the reader's attention to your assets, accomplishments, and achievements by using bold type and headlines. Just don't overdo it.
