The Business of Building Business: Retail Store Construction Showcase

A Retail Store is a commercial building that serves as the location for consumers to purchase products or materials from the merchant.

Retail buildings come in all sizes, from small suites in flex / tech buildings to strip plazas and retail centers to stand-alone mega-stores that offer several acres of floor space. The design for a retail store is heavily dependent on the products being marketed. For example, a property like the American Light Showroom required significant electrical wiring and an "industrial" look to support dozens of different types of lighting technologies, displayed in real-world commercial / industrial settings.

Larger retailers have incorporated these factors into a standardized design for their stores as part of their branding process. A national chain of retail stores like Garden Ridge employs a blend of steel building construction and tilt-up construction in their architecture that is consistent from store to store. This layout establishes a single "look" for Garden Ridge stores that also supports the home decor retailer's high volume of sales and diverse product selection.

This lens is provided to showcase a variety of retail store construction projects, to illustrate the many ways a building of this type can be built.

The new building, constructed with tilt-up construction, provides Harley-Davidson of North Texas with 50,000 SF of space over two stories. The exterior is clad with a brick facade on the front and sides to match the look of the original Harley-Davidson manufacturing plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A 42' tower atrium with a brick facade stands above the front entrance to the dealership.

To the rear of the building, a large paved area enclosed in a wrought iron fence provides secure storage for the dealership's equipment. Behind the storage area is a large open concrete pad where customers can receive training and test out the bikes.

On the interior, a large foyer inside the tower atrium welcomes customers and provides space for display of several motorcycles in an enclosed setting. The main showroom features decorative bands of thin brick veneer with additional bands and accents of dark wood on all walls. Structural columns are clad with steel and brick veneer. The floor is covered with imported ceramic floor tiling alternating with brick.

I work for a large retailer and once had the experience of working in a store while a new shopping centre was constructed around us. Tilt-up construction was used for the major parts of the new building. For several months workers and shoppers got to enjoy entering the building through a long narrow "tunnel". It was an interesting experience. :)
Nice work on this lens and thanks for bringing back the memories. :)
