I really enjoyed this lens. Retford has seen a lot of history, dating back to just before the Norman Invasion! I don't recall reading what the population of Retford is today. But I am mightily impressed by the fact that it support 19 pubs!

Hi Jennysue, thanks for the heads up, your thinking on shareapic is right, they are having a few probs at the minute and I'm in the process of moving all my images to another host.
As for the map, its just the normal google maps module available in your workshop - I entered retford, notts, uk and it works fine
  • jennysue19 Oct 10, 2009 @ 11:06 am | delete
Hi Retford from Havant in Hampshire. Never visited your town, but you never know! Just nice to see somewhere in the UK here on Squidoo towns.

Noticed during my visit that your Kings Park photos aren't showing. Is it a Shareapic problem?

Question for you - how did you do your Google map, I thought it only worked for USA.
  • papawu Aug 30, 2009 @ 6:18 pm | delete
My Gosh! An amazing amount of research must have gone into this lens! As something of a history buff, I truly enjoyed the historical background of Retford. If I may, could I suggest putting the guestbook a little lower so that it comes after the rest of the Retford info? I almost didn't go onto the B & B module because I tend to think the guestbook is the end of the lens. Then again, this could just be me of course. LOL

Brilliant lens! I love the old photographs. I'll come back to this one ;)
  • Ringonel Apr 16, 2009 @ 3:24 pm | delete
The mystery pub in the last photo just might be the white cottage thats still on the left hand bend on London Rd. There's a fence now and some well grown shrubs/hedge but it looks very similar to the pub in terms of aspect, orientation and window layout. Might be worth checking out?

Check out the history pages on the Ordsall Parish websitehttp://fp.ordsallparish.plus.com/Parish/Pages/history.htm
Two Kippax brothers are mentioned as being builders/landowners in the town.

I do like this lens and found it really interesting although I've never visited Retford. I've lensrolled it to my own lenses on English towns. You've done very well getting all those old pictures of the town.

Hi again, this may help Ron Woilter and Samantha. Ron there is a post here regarding WW2 and Leeds and Samantha there is a couple of maps although not very readable. There is also lots of photo's to take a look at.

    http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/nottinghamshire/retford/

Also to Samantha I have found out that there was indeed a farm on carolgate and am trying to find out it's name. I am also being led to believe that there may be a Benny Glover still living in Retford and he possibly used to work at waterfields. He may relate to your fathers step grand father as the person I have spoke to thinks they were uncle and nephew. That is all I have at the minute. I am unsure, but if you go into my profile, there is a contact me button if you would prefer to email me rather than leave a blurb, however you may need to be a squidoo user, I am unsure. I wish you the best in finding your family's history and hope to post again if I can find you any more in
  • Wraggy Dec 31, 2008 @ 4:08 am | delete
Retford seems a lovely place. Would live to visit.
  • oneskms Dec 28, 2008 @ 11:22 pm | delete
Hi Samantha, I will try to find out for you if I can pin down any one local with the Glover surname. Unsure about the farm, carolgate is part of Retford's 'town' centre and there are no farms there at present and as I can remember there never has been but I could be wrong. Do you want some names of any other farms in the area ?
    [in reply to Samantha]
  • Samantha Dec 28, 2008 @ 3:40 pm | delete
I would be very greatful if somebody from Retford could help me with my family history , my fathers step family the Glovers were tenants of a farm in Carolgate during the 1940's/50's maybe earlier also. My father can not remember the name of the farm but the family were Salvation army folk and his step grandfather was called Benny Glover. Even if anyone could provide the names of farms present in this area now would be great. Many Thanks, Samantha.

I enjoyed your lens as well. Back when I was doing genealogy research, I found one of my ancestors was mayor of the city of Canterbury in 1609. I found some interesting facts about the family and am going to do a lens about them.
