How To Find Great Deals When Shopping for Retired American Girl Dolls
American Girl dolls, accessories, and books have always been popular with young girls. Grown-ups love them, too. The dolls represent American girls from different stages of our country's history. The detail in these dolls is truly amazing, and that is one reason that collectors have embraced this hobby.
Limited Edition "Girl of the Year" American Girl Dolls were introduced in 2001. These extra special dolls feature smaller, specific collections and individual storybooks. Each collection is created specifically for the individual doll's character and features accessories based on the book's plotline. The "Girl of the Year" American Girl dolls remain available for only one year.
Adults seek to purchase retired American Girl dolls because they love to collect them and are also interested in a good investment. The dolls go up in value after they are discontinued and become much more difficult to acquire.
When an existing doll model is no longer being manufactured and available for direct purchase from the company, those that were too late must resort to purchasing the retired American Girl dolls that are already in circulation.
Collectors often rush to buy the brand new dolls just as soon as they are released. Serious collectors also scour around for discontinued and other rare, retired American Girl dolls to add to their personal collections.
Other times, youngsters may show an interest in a retired American Girl doll they've read about. In those cases, their parents (who are anxious to grant their beloved daughters' wishes) must turn to searching for the particular desired retired American Girl doll either locally or online using the Internet.
Below you'll find retired American Girl dolls for sale at great prices, oftentimes with free shipping offered. These collectible dolls are rarities and definitely great additions to anyone's collection.

Retired American Girl Dolls Can Be An Excellent Investment Choice
Every day it becomes harder to predict the future. Who knows who will win the election or what the stock market will be doing a week from now? However, as a doll collector from way back, I can tell you what's going to happen in American Girl Land. As time goes on and the Pleasant Company begins to use up their available Samantha and Nellie inventory, the value of these dolls and their wardrobes is going to escalate faster than a feverish temperature during cold and flu season. If you were looking for a good investment, this is it.I hope that no one tries to hoard these beautiful toys just for their cash value but by the same token, Samantha may be a particularly good choice for savvy little girls and doll collectors this holiday season. Further I must add that I have noticed a distressing tendency on the part of some people to cavalierly give their kids' toys away or sell them for a few dollars at garage sales. If there is a Samantha (or any other kind of American Girl Doll) in your family at the present time, you might want to hang on to her because as a doll collector from way back, I can assure you that today's beautiful doll may someday be a future generation's priceless antique.

Marisol Luna - 2005 Girl of the Year
Limited Edition Girls of Today - Retired American Girl Doll Marisol
Retired American Girl Doll "Marisol" was introduced during the Christmas season of 2004 with an extensive collection of dance outfits and accessories. She became retired due to sell out on December 15, 2005.Marisol is a lively 10-year-old girl who was born to dance. She's a fourth-grader who lives with her loving parents in a busy and largely Hispanic neighborhood in the heart of Chicago. Marisol goes to school (where she is a Two-Square champion) takes care of her cat, Rascal, plays with the kids in her neighborhood, and takes dance lessons. Ballet folklorico (Mexican folkdance) is her favorite type of dance -- and where she really shines -- but she's been exposed to some jazz and a little tap. She's also taking ballet, but she's new to it and a little impatient with its rigors. Her attitude towards ballet changes only slightly when she meets a wonderful new neighbor. Miss Mendoza is a former Rockette who gently reminds Marisol that ballet is worth working hard at, because it's the basis for all serious dance. The upsetting news that her family is moving out to the suburbs is made worse when Marisol learns that the dance studio in her new neighborhood has closed. No tap, no ballet folklorico -- not even ballet. She may have to take karate lessons! Instead, with the help of new friends, resourceful Marisol finds a way to keep dancing. She learns how to combine the best of her old world with a renewed commitment to stretch and grow and try her hardest, no matter how challenging it might be.

Chrissa Maxwell - 2009 Girl of the Year, Plus Her Best Friends Sonali Mathews & Gwen Thompson
Limited Edition Girls of Today - Retired American Girl Doll Chrissa

Retired American Girl Doll "Chrissa" is the seventh Girl of the Year. She her collection was released by the American Girl Doll company on January 1, 2009 and an accompanying direct-to-DVD film entitled "Chrissa Stands Strong" based on her story premiered January 5 and became available for purchase the next day. Chrissa is the first Girl of the Year to have any "best friend" companion dolls. The two characters, Sonali Matthews and Gwen Thompson, are from the books and movie, and neither had a separate collection.
Gwen Thompson is white with blond hair and brown eyes. She is a lonely girl in her class; Chrissa is the first to befriend her. She was part of the Queen Bees with Tara and Jadyn, but stopped being their friend after their cruel pranks and became Chrissa's friend. Samantha Parkington, 1904 Historical Doll
Archived American Girl Doll "Samantha" - Retired American Girl Dolls
Retired American Girl Doll Samantha was one of the three American Girls that launched the collection in 1986 along with Molly and Kirsten.American Girl used the term 'archive' when it ceased production and sales of Samantha, her friend Nellie, and both their collections in May 2009. This was a unique move in the company's history for its Historical Characters.
Samantha is an only child -- a bright, compassionate girl -- growing up during the Edwardian period (although American Girl designated her as Victorian). She was orphaned at age five and is being raised by her wealthy Victorian-era grandmother in fictional Mount Bedford, New York.
Samantha's world is filled with frills and finery, parties, and play, but she also observes that times are not good for everybody. She befriends a poor servant girl named Nellie O'Malley, whose life is nothing like Samantha's. That's why she tries to make a difference in the life of her friend. Eventually Samantha, Nellie, and Nellie's young sisters are adopted by Samantha's uncle and aunt. Samantha book themes include women's suffrage, child labor, and classism.

Sales of Nellie and her collection officially ceased as of May 2009.Nellie is a resourceful, smart and resilient orphan girl growing up in 1906 New York who is trying to find a way to keep the promise she made to her dying mother -- to keep her family together. Shopping for Authentic Retired American Girl Dolls
The Pleasant Company (now owned by Mattel) started American Girl in 1986. It may be hard to find the specific American Girl doll models that have been discontinued. You can buy some of them (as well as accessories for them) on Amazon, but the truth is it becomes much harder to find a specific type of American Girl doll when it has been retired. They become much more expensive, as well.
Also be careful that you do not buy an American Girl doll that is actually a fake or a replica. If you are purchasing from a trusted eBay seller with some decent feedback, then you should be okay. However, don't just trust someone because they say a doll is authentic. Look for evidence such as photos of the Pleasant Company label sewn into the doll's body.
Often you will be able to buy clothes or outfits for the dolls that may be generic, so determine if you mind this or not and proceed. You can find some great deals on dolls' clothing for 18-inch dolls that are handmade and quite beautiful.
Of course you can always contact the seller to see if an item is authentic. If they do not get back to you, then you'll realize you are probably wasting your time.

Lots of Fun Doll Clothes and Accessories for Retired American Girl Dolls
When the budget doesn't allow 100% brand loyalty, it's nice these standard size dolls fit accessories universally available. And the reverse, that American Girl items often work well with old favorites.
My mother, 90, was absolutely delighted with the early 1900's fur trimmed wool coat and matching hat I found from American Girl for her original precious, now antique, 18" china doll. It was a perfect match for a 1920 photo of her own mother in the same outfit. I framed the picture and presented her with her forgotten doll dressed in new American Girl clothes for Christmas (while my granddaughter was simultaneously receiving a new coveted AG collectible set). They brought tears of joy as she cried, "I never thought I'd ever see her again!" ~ Anonymous

This is a collection of Christmas stories. It includes stories about Molly, Kit, Samantha, Addy, Kirsten and Josephina, with family trees and illustrations. Very nice and presentable book, it also has a CD with holiday music and between the stories, short "looking back" texts on Christmas celebrations at different years with pictures and photos. ~ Y. Khodyakova
My 6-year-old daughter calls this "a winter treat." She really loves it "because I love American Girls. I like to read about them and all the different Christmases, because I want to learn about everything in the old times." Along with the seasonal stories, the book includes interesting information about how Christmas was celebrated in the different times. I highly recommend it to American Girl lovers as well as children interested in history. One warning, though, my daughter wants to own every doll she reads about. ~ K. Kirby

American Girl Magazine
Created especially for girls age 8 and up, American Girl is an appealing, age-appropriate alternative to teen magazines. Features advice, crafts, contests, puzzles, games, giggles, and more!American Girl Magazine
Amazon Review By third time mom
(Naperville, IL United States
What our daughters should be reading.... American Girl magazine is geared to girls aged 7-13. Much younger than that and many girls aren't reading at the appropriate level yet. Much older and they may be ready to move on. But honestly I'm surprised to read so many reviews by 10 or 11 year old girls who feel they're too old for this magazine. I don't believe girls that age NEED magazines based solely on makeup tricks, flirting with boys, etc. AG has articles such as dealing with relationships with friends. Like when you and your best friend start to grow apart. Or when she moves away. Articles like one about a girl whose family travels around the world on their sailboat for two years. Crafts that you can actually be proud to give at the age of 10.
Several reviewer have complained that the magazine is short and expensive. It is. But here's why: there is NO advertising (short of anything American Girl related). In many magazines, advertising accounts for easily half the pages. And advertising enables publishers to sell magazines for a low cost. AG has no advertising and so has to charge a fair price to produce it. I'm more than willing to pay for that kind of publication.
Parents ordering for your daughters, you know your girl. If you've got a 10 year old going on 16, this may not be for your child. If you have a precocious 6 year old, she might like it as well. AG is the kind of magazine I'm glad my daughters enjoy.

- Great lens! I have a question though ... years ago, I purchased on eBay the Kirsten doll for my daughter (before Kristen was retired). She was in relatively good condition though her hair had been unbraided and was a little frizzy/mattted. I sent her to the hospital and they combed her hair and rebraided it. I still wasn't pleased with her appearance however and my daughter didn't like to play with her. So, I sent her back again just recently for a new head (now in transit). From the perspective of a collector, was this NOT a good idea?
