How To Retire To Thailand/Asia

Retire To Thailand

I'm Ken Silver, and right now - I'm sitting in a comfortable chair on a beautiful beach. (I've sworn to my host I won't tell exactly where, but look at a map of Leyte, one of the countless lovely islands of the Philippines.) There's a sweet, soft breeze in the air. I've got a plate of a dozen barbecued shrimp in front of me, and a cold beer.
Not a bad lunch for a dollar! Plus, free mangos on all the trees!

In front of me, on the clear blue water, a boat drifts by. Maybe I'll go snorkeling this afternoon, or do a cheap scuba dive. Theres a subtle mix of incense and jasmine flower in the air. This is my kind of tropical paradise... cheap and unspoiled! Just one guesthouse here, offering comfortable rooms with private bathrooms for three dollars a night. The retired American who owns the place likes to keep things private!

It's getting colder every day in the United States and Europe now, but warm and sunny here! Tonight, my friends and I go into town by fifty cent taxi for dinner and to party! There is nightlife here! The Philippines are great, but I could also enjoy the same cheap luxury in Thailand, Bali, Laos, Vietnam, any of the great countries of tropical Asia! Come the summer, maybe I'll move on to cheap skiiing in northern India!

THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK THAT SHOWS YOU HOW TO USE ALL OF ASIA AS YOUR PLAYGROUND!

Retire To Thailand

Retire To Thailand

The wild Asia of violence and poverty is thankfully gone. Now it's the most rapidly modernizing continent on the globe!

Yet it still retains the gracious, easy, lifestyle and traditions of the past.

Are You Ready To Retire In Pattaya Thailand?

by KengIsm

Here are some factors that will "Pre-qualify" you and help you decide whether or not you are a retiree candidate for Pattaya Thailand

1. You have to be open to new adventurers; Pattaya is a fantastic beach for visitors. There will be many new things for your experience. It's a unique country in Southeast Asia, with its own culture quite difference from other countries in Asia.

2. You love to travel. There are countless things for you to see and do in Pattaya, Thailand.

3. You have to be able to adapt to a new lifestyle and be tolerant of others. Your life and the people around you will be very different from you as at your country.

4. You have to be enthusiastic about new things in a different culture. Thais people have their own way and their own culture. You will have to learn to adjust. Many foreigners are shocked when they discover that things are done in a certain way in Thailand. You have to be open-minded.

5. You should be able to make and enjoy with your new friends. This is important point for you. You will need new comrade so you won't feel bored.

6. You should have to learn the basics of the Thai language. Try to be fluent, or at least competent, in the types of phrases you'll need it in you new life.

7. You have to be healthy enough mentally and physically. Living in Pattaya is hard for foreigners at first. You will need to be strong in both body and mind to make the most of your time.

8. You have to accept your status of being a foreigner in Pattaya, Thailand. You won't be able to vote, and the Thais are not usually interested in listening to your point of view on the country's politics or economy.

9. You should appreciate a slower pace of life if you choose to retire in one of the smaller towns. Boredom is not something you often find in the Land of Smiles, but when you are away from the cities, you will find life moves more slowly. Make sure you are involved in enough leisure activities to avoid boredom.

10. You have to be optimistic minded. Foreigners who don't know Thailand may try to talk you out of moving there. Studying as much as possible before you go. Don't let negative opinion like prostitution, the insufferably hot weather, or dirt and disease turn you off. Pattaya is rich in beauty and culture and famous for its friendly people.

11. You will have to deal with a different type of bureaucracy. It takes longer to get simple things done in Thailand. You'll have to get used to its ways.

12. You must be financially stable without needing to work. If you want to work part-time in Pattaya, make sure you are up to date on the continually changing laws regarding work permits or business ownership, and have a good fall-back plan for your future life in Pattaya, Thailand.

Expat Living in Thailand

by Alex Smith

Situated, as it is, at the heart of the South East Asian region it is no surprise that Thailand is home to many expats. It is not only convenient geographically; it also has a modern infrastructure making it a convenient place from which to do business. The ease of living and the variety and beauty of places to live also mean that Thailand is also a popular place to retire. It is a country where a modest pension can go a long way.

For those wishing to make their home in Thailand the first and most important hurdle to jump is that of visas. Although visiting as a tourist is a simple process, negotiating the bureaucracy for a longer term stay is more complicated. If you are employed in Thailand you will need a work permit. This involves your employer providing proof that you are genuinely employed. You then apply for a non immigrant visa, preferably from your country of origin, which allows a stay of three months. During that time you need to complete the process of getting a work permit at which point you will be granted a one year renewable visa. For a retirement visa you need to be over fifty years old and prove sufficient funds.

Once established in Thailand you will need health insurance. Private health care is excellent and, compared to western countries, is also very cheap. However cheap it is if you should be unfortunate and need major medical the cost does mount up. There is not really any need to be covered for outpatient care since the insurance payouts are minimal and it is cheap in any case. BUPA BlueCross is an international company that can take care of all this. Opening a bank account in Thailand is very simple. You do not necessarily need to show residency but it helps. The Kasikorn Bank is the one that seems most foreigner friendly. You will be issued with an ATM card that also functions as a debit card.

If you want to work in Thailand there are opportunities but it can be complicated. The single biggest need in all of Asia, given that English is the global language of commerce, is for people who can teach. These days you will need to be educated up to University standard and you will definitely fair better if you also have a TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) or TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification that qualifies you as a properly trained teacher. Apart from that there is work in the tourist industry if you have skills in diving or the hospitality industry. Wages in Thailand are generally fairly low if employed locally but then so is the cost of living. This works both ways. Many people choose to work "remotely" for companies in their own countries and with advances in technology and the reasonable living costs this is an increasing trend.

When living in Thailand the expat does have to get used to things that would generally not be an issue in Europe or the US. Although in many ways very advanced, Thailand is also very newly developed. One has to deal with a, sometimes, chaotic bureaucracy, a legal system that lacks definition and a police force that is underpaid and therefore unorthodox in methods of law enforcement. If you are asked for extra curricular payments and you are guilty the most important thing is to remain friendly and keep the costs down. In the main this will involve minor traffic infringements and the standard 'fee' to walk away is about 200 baht. When it comes to serious crimes, especially drugs, law enforcement in Thailand is punitive to put it mildly.

One thing that every expat in Thailand learns sooner or later is patience. Things don't always happen as quickly as they should and sometimes they don't happen at all. To show anger and impatience, however justified, will probably just make things worse. For the expat the first phrase of Thai to be learned is 'Mai Pen Rai' or 'never mind'.

Thailand Can Be A Retirees Paradise

by Lee Dobbins

If you are starting to wonder about where you could retire to, the chances are that Thailand has not been one of your first choices. However, the people who have retired to Thailand really do love the way of life there and it may well be worth thinking about it once you have done a little research.

What to Expect From Retiring in Thailand

Thailand is well known for its fantastic weather and it is certainly somewhere that you should consider if you want to experience a warm winter. Also, one of the main reasons why people do choose to retire to Thailand is the fact that there is not as much crime there as there is in some Western countries. In fact Thailand is known to be one of the safest countries in the world and attacks on strangers is extremely low and that allows you to feel safer than you would in a country such as the UK or in America.

If you are on a slight budget then there will always be something to suit your needs in Thailand. All you have to do is look away from the tourist driven places and you will find that the prices of accommodation and living is a lot lower than it is in built up areas.

Another good factor about the cost of living in Thailand is the medical care. The treatments and the facilities are extremely modern, yet they are also really inexpensive too. This means that you will easily be able to afford any health care which you may need and it is just as good as it would be back home.

If you are thinking of retiring to Thailand then one thing you will need to think about is what you would like to spend your time doing. There are a number of activities available to you and it basically depends upon how active you want to be. For example you can take part in scuba diving or if you would still like to feel like you are working then you can apply to become a volunteer teacher. You can also just relax and enjoy cultural activities if you would prefer.

Overall retiring in Thailand is definitely something you should consider. The cost of living there is extremely low and it is one of the safest places in the world. With no cold weather to worry even in winter, about what more could you possibly ask for?
