What happens when you submit your web site to 50 different social bookmarking sites? I decided to give it a try with my t-shirt website Remix Retro Tees.
This experiment will examine which of tthese services generate any back links or human traffic. I have a feeling that the top 50 bookmarking sites are like the top 50 search engines - only the top few will matter at all.

What is Social Bookmarking?
Social bookmarking sites allow users to share their favorite websites publicly. Sites can also use this data to provide search results based on their users favorites. Some bookmarking sites also allow user voting to bring attention to noteworthy links.
Getting social bookmarks for you squidoo lens or web site can provide much needed traffic or a helpful SEO boost.

Which One?
Each bookmarking service is unique.
The various social bookmarking sites have different advantages and disadvantages. The best case scenario is when the site displays regular uncloaked links, does not use nofollow and lists your URL across multiple categories however this is rarely offered.

Social Bookmarking Results
The results of the 50 social media bookmarks experiment are in!
After 2 years the results were not hard to judge, not too many bookmarks ever showed up as backlinks to the search engines but they may have contributed a bit. Many of the social bookmarking sites have disappeared.
I'd say stick with a few of the top social bookmarking services and not worry about all these other places.

- I can recommend the Paperblog RSS feed listing service for squidoo and web pages. Quickly indexed and create lots of hits on Squidoo articles. Zimbio is also another similar resource.
