Retro Fish Surfboards

There's been a sort of a "retro revolution" with surfboards, particularly with the fish boards.

Retro Fish surfboards are well-known for their ability to ride loose and sail effortlessly and quickly - even on smaller waves.

The Difference With The Retro-Fish

These are good boards for intermediate or more experienced surfers - They allow for fast turns and movement while being thick enough to easily paddle and float.

Wave catching: This type of board moves quickly and easily, even in the smallest of waves, making catching waves more like flying than surfing.

But - when you're riding, be prepared to think fast! If you're not controlling it, it might start controlling you. The upside to this is the speed - they're a blast!

Highest Recommendation: Becker Surf

Phil Becker (one of the founders of Becker Surf) is one of the oldest and most experienced surfboard makers in the industry. The craftsmen are just that - real craftsmen. They also know what the best boards have been since almost the "beginning of time" of surfboards. With the Retro Fish, they are bringing back one of the best rides ever built!

BECKER SURFBOARDS Old School Fish Surfboard

Description:

Don't let the old school name fool you, this puppy will school you hard if you blink after any move you make. You need to think fast and be ready to move even faster on this 70's beauty. Ridden short and wide, this guy picks up waves like you can't believe. You hardly need any wave power to run it, so it just flies in smaller waves. Add some power to the waves and hang damn on! it is about as much skating as surfing, but style does matter and watching someone who knows what they are doing riding one of these is a true treat. We sure don't miss bell bottom pants, but we sure are glad Phil (Becker) and the boys brought back one of the best rides ever built! Ride one and see, you will be very stoked. Don't be afraid of the size, these guys are wide, and the thickness carries, so they paddle pretty darn good in the small sizes.

The 6'0" pup we measured was 21 1/2" wide, had a 17" nose and a 17" tail. Thickness was 2 3/4".
#2 Price: $570.00

BECKER SURFBOARDS Rincon Stinger

Description:

This board is a updated version of one of our most popular boards of the 70's. It rides very loose, but with a stylish touch. You don't throw this pup around, you finesse it. I think that is why this design has come back to popularity. It is a very fun board to ride, and is not your conventional bump and grind tri-fin shortboard. If you watch someone skillful ride on of these, you just might be tempted to get out and watch - And then get out and go buy one! Our glass shop puts solid opaque glass jobs, and period piece pinlines on this model in very cool 70's colors.

6'8" measures out at 20.5" wide, 14" nose, 14.75" tail, and 2 5/8" thick.
#3 Price: $570.00

BECKER SURFBOARDS Rocket Quad

Description:

The traditional fish goes quad.

Our traditional quad fin fish. It's a great choice for surfers looking for the benefits of a fish design without sacrificing maneuverability. The outline is similar to a traditional twin fin fish, which means the board performs excellent in small surf. The quad fin set-up creates more speed, drive, and maneuverability than a traditional twin fun fish. Features a 4 fin version of the Pro Box Versa Plane System.
#4. Price: $565.00

BECKER SURFBOARDS Mangiagli Fish

Description:

Phil (Becker) nailed this puppy in the 70's and he has recreated this classic with updates that will spin your head for sure! Same template, beveled rail and wing system as the board we all remember, but with an updated fin system that gives you so much more flexibility and peformance potential. Lighter glassing of course with the improvements in foam and resin in the last 30 years, and he has tweaked the rocker a tad which wasn't hard to do consider all that he has learned since then. The wing is a bit less pronounced than the original, and you will appreciate that change. It plays into the whole idea of "updating" the original without sacrificing all the qualities that are again making these the must-have boards for 2005 and beyond.
#5. Price: $605.00

BECKER SURFBOARDS Versa Plane 5

Description:

The Versa-Plane model: Incredible versatility for all wave types.

A new twist on our proven fish designs. All the benefits of a twin, quad, twinzer, and tri fin in one board, hence the name VersaPlane, (versatile planing surface). Using the probox fin system (www.proboxhawaii.com) allows for adjustable cant angles and 1/4" of play for forward and rear fin placement. The entry and exit rocker is comparable to our old school fish for great paddling speed and forgiveness in small-mushy surf to head high perfection. The outline is comparable to the old school fish with the addition of a double wing swallow to assist in release through turns and down the line stability. The bottom contours are a flat panel "V" to a double barrel concave between the fins, exiting out the tail. This gives the board great rail to rail transition, with lift and drive off the tail which helps maintain speed through turns and snap off the top.

Not For Beginners!

A Retro Fish Board is not a good board to start out with if you're just learning. Like anything else, surfing requires a learning period, and certain boards are more appropriate for beginners than others. Becker Surf understands this, and has created boards just for that purpose:

Doing it right and plenty of practice will get you up to expert level! Using the right equipment is an important part of learning to surf.

About Becker Surf and Phil Becker

There are not many surf manufacturers that take the time or trouble to hand-shape surfboards anymore, but the craftsmen at Becker Surf do and always have.

One of the nation's oldest surfboard manufacturers,
Becker Surf got its start in 1980 when three men including Phil Becker each invested $8,000, formed a partnership and expanded Rick Surfboards (a Hermosa Beach business that Becker and Mangiagli bought in 1975).

Working as a team, Becker shaped the boards, Mangiagli coated them with waterproof fiberglass and Hollander painted them with spectacular designs.

Today, the Becker Surf factory employs 10 craftsmen who produce about 4,000 surfboards each year. The weeklong manufacturing process begins with cutting foam planks with a jigsaw and then contouring the boards with an electric planer and other hand tools. After shaping, the boards are painted, covered with fiberglass and sanded satin smooth before they receive a gloss coat of resin for protection against the sun, surf and sand.
