The first form of sandwich is attributed to the ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder, who is said to have put meat from the Paschal lamb and bitter herbs inside matzo (or flat, unleavened bread) during Passover. The filling between the matzos served as a reminder to Israelites of their forced labor constructing Egyptian buildings. For this reason, Romans referred to the meal as a "cibus Hilleli," or Hillel's Snack. [1]

Great lens, 5 ***** I love old cookbooks, so many good old recipes. Especially in England, so many of the things we used to eat when I was growing up you rarely see any more, same in the USA I suppose as more people switch to convenience foods and eating out. Posted March 21, 2008 |

Great lens! I once had a number of retro cookbooks, courtesy of my late mother. I'm kicking myself for it now, but I sold them at a yard sale when I moved to Vancouver. I didn't appreciate retro things at that time. Now I'd give anything to have them back. Posted January 15, 2008 |
