Layaway Has Returned to Retail and It's Available Online, Too!
Layaway was a paperwork nightmare, and a big hassle to run, as well as bringing in very little income. Layaway did not pay for itself.
But in the current economic situation, with people out of work, or worrying about their jobs, it makes a lot of sense to reconsider having a layaway plan for customers in order to allow them to buy items that they might not otherwise, and to offer it as another form of customer service to let them know we understand. After all, we are all in the economic boat together.
So, my little gallery Lake Erie Artists Gallery now has a layaway plan.
What is Your Experience with Layaway?
How Does Layaway Work?
- The retail store has a layaway plan that requires a certain percentage payment of the total price as a down payment.
- Most stores have a processing fee of at least $5.00 because of the added paperwork and storage.
- The customer is required to pay at least a certain percentage on each payment date until paid in full.
- The store has a time limit as to when the item must be paid in full.
- The store may or may not retain a portion of the paid amount if the customer does not pay in full.
At Lake Erie Artists Gallery, here is how we are handling it.
We are allowing layaway on items $100 or more. (We have the leeway to allow it on lower priced items if the situation warrants it.)
Customers must put down 25% of the entire purchase price including tax. Then the merchandise must be paid in full within 60 days. We are charging $5.00 processing fee, but it is being waived for regular customers.

Do you know that on some items Amazon will allow you to make payments? Not quite layaway, but almost the same.

Using Layaway to Pay for Things Online
Several large retailers have signed on already, including Best Buy and Sears. It will be interesting to see how this program works for these retailers, and how successful eLayaway turns out to be as an alternative to credit cards.

- I guess I think more along the lines of Ramkitten... if I can't afford to buy an item, I have to save up for it. I suppose some kids have to have some items that sell out. I don't think that I will ever use it. This year Christmas is tight, so I'm making gifts.

- I've never purchased anything on layaway ... and, for a long time, I honestly didn't really understand why it was necessary. I just figured, why not put money aside as often as possible (in an envelope perhaps) until you'd have enough to purchase the item? But then it hit me that, by the time there was enough money, maybe the item would no longer be available or would be sold out. So I can see a customer doing it for that reason.

- Layaway is a good solution during this tight economy. I remember teaching my teen daughter to do that, and how to handle it with her little part time job. I think it was a serious lesson in learning to deal in cash!
