Make Your Own or Purchase Reusable Snack, Sandwich and Reusable Produce Bag

My interest in finding ways to use reusable snack bags, reusable sandwich bags and reusable produce bags intensified after making the lens on Reducing the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch.

I realized when figuring out 15 Ways to Minimize Your Impact on the Garbage Island" that I needed to find a way to minimized the number of plastic bags we use weekly in making the girls lunches for school.

I went in search of reusable snack bags and reusable snack bag patterns. Inspired by the simplicity of making snack bags (and the price to purchase ones already made) one of my summer projects is going to be designing and making my own reusable snack bags and reusable sandwich bags.

Until I can design my own patterns, I've pulled together many of the available patterns for creating your own reusable snack bags, reusable sandwich bags and reusable sandwich wraps along with pre-made products on Amazon.

Benefits of Using Reusable Snack Bags

The following ideas on the benefits of using reusable snack bags come from Jennifer Chait of the Inhabitots blog with a few modifications:
  1. They are Earth-friendly
Reusable bags are much better for the environment than plastic bags. Cloth bags will biodegrade over time. Cloth is a safe material for storing snacks.
  2. They are cost effective.
Reusable cloth bags last and can be reused hundreds of times. Plastic bag can often be reused a few times. Other storage methods are more expensive over time than cloth bags.
  3. They are easy to use.
Reusable snack, sandwich and produce bags can be easily toss into the washing machine with a normal load of washing. Cloth is lightweight and can easily be put into a little purse or lunch sack.
  4. They help parents raise eco-kids.
Using reusable, non-disposables items allows children to see that you can reuse and reduce trash from a very young age. Children can understand why cloth snack bags are better than plastic. It is a way to grow a green child.

Raising a Green Child

Environmentally-conscious parents are looking for ways to raise their children to also be aware of their environment and taking care of the planet. Teaching children about reusing is a way to grow a green child.

A great way to introduce children on the concepts of reducing waste and reusing products is to get them to use reusable cloth snack and sandwich bags.

By using these cloth bags every day and not using plastic bags, children are able to see how what they are doing can make an impact on the planet.

Reusable Bag Patterns

Designing Patterns for Reusable Bags

After searching the Internet to find reusable snack bags, reusable sandwich bags and reusable sandwich wraps, I began to realize that many of these patterns were pretty simple and with my background skills as a seamstress and compulsive crafter it would be possible to design my own.

I was also inspired by the price to purchase these reusable products pre-made, and my collection of cotton fabrics

I am hopeful that one of my summer projects is going to be designing and making my own reusable snack bags and reusable sandwich bags and possibly making the patterns available through Etsy.

A Squidoo Lens on Living without Plastic Bags

How to Live Without Plastic Bags
I'll admit it, I'm kind of obsessed.I just get so irritated by the constant proliferation of plastic bags in our society. We use them for about 10 minutes, to transport groceries or some other merchandise, and then we toss them in a landfill for about a million years. Some do get reused.
