Wow thanks - just wondering what to do with a set of sheets that are getting a little old. Love the shower curtain idea - would look great in a kids bathroom.

What a fun lens!! Our standard two uses for old sheets are: 1. Donate to one of our local animal shelters for bedding and clean-up. 2. Use under fleece in one of our large guinea pig cages! (We have a guinea pig rescue.) Homeless animals can always put old sheets to use... And they need all the help they can get. ;)

I like making curtains from old sheets and using them for dusting too. There is so many uses for them. Great ideas, thanks for sharing. :)
  • Helene-Malmsio Feb 4, 2012 @ 8:08 am | delete
I like plain flannelette sheets and pillows, so when the pillows lose their fluffy texture they become dustcloths, and the sheets I use the sides of the sheet, that are never worn out compared to the centre, and make new pillowcases from them. Super easy.
  • happynutritionist Jan 13, 2012 @ 8:47 pm | delete
I used new sheets as curtains for my children's bedrooms when they were little. Thanks for the suggestions for old ones. Nice!
  • DecoratingforEvents Jan 12, 2012 @ 9:46 am | delete
I love reusing in any form -- very eco friendly! I have actually made curtains and a shower curtain from old sheets and it works great!
  • Sylvestermouse Jan 11, 2012 @ 8:14 am | delete
These are some really great suggestions! I have made several shower curtains out of sheets over the years, but my all time favorite use for a old sheet is using it to wrap the base of my baby trees in winter. When the snow or ice is gone, I bring the sheets in, wash them and they are ready for the next time.
  • Pukeko Jan 11, 2012 @ 7:12 am | delete
Lots of really creative ideas here. I have only done the obvious one :) Blessed.
  • Frischy Jan 11, 2012 @ 6:48 am | delete
Thanks for all these great ideas! The sheet I use on my bed in the winter just got a rip this week. Now I have some ideas for projects to do with the top sheet, which is still in good shape.
  • NYtoSCimjustme Jan 11, 2012 @ 1:16 am | delete
I agree with BarbRad below... although the outer edges could probably used for quilting squares or small fabric crafts - the centers are generally faded and worn too much for reuse as anything other than rags or such.... but great ideas for those who use sheets 'gently'.
  • Blessedmombygrace Jan 10, 2012 @ 11:23 pm | delete
Great ideas. I've got a few mismatched sheets that I have been hanging onto, they are pretty worn, so maybe I'll try for a rag rug!
  • lizziebeth Jan 10, 2012 @ 10:06 pm | delete
I use my old sheets for drop cloths, rags, and to cover plants like BarbRad does with hers. But I can see there are many other things people can do with them. Thanks for this lens. :-)
  • CCGAL Jan 10, 2012 @ 9:49 pm | delete
I buy second hand sheets at thrift shops to sew Halloween Costumes and also to sew rag rugs with. I also like to use them to sew up a practice version of a pattern I want to alter and reuse. Old bedsheets are generally a lot cheaper than buying new muslin for those projects.
  • PaulOnBooks Jan 10, 2012 @ 9:07 pm | delete
My grandmother used to cut them down the middle and sew edge to edge to extend their use as bedsheets.
  • BarbRad Jan 10, 2012 @ 7:43 pm | delete
Interesting ideas, but when my sheets are ready to recycle, they aren't good for much except that first batch of suggestions. I normally use mine to cover up the fronts of bookcases to keep the dust off or to cover plants to keep them from freezing.
  • Joan4 Jan 10, 2012 @ 5:47 pm | delete
    Great ideas for recycling sheets!
  • ohcaroline Jan 10, 2012 @ 5:13 pm | delete
I always reuse my old sheets. So many uses for them.
  • BuckHawk Jan 10, 2012 @ 5:09 pm | delete
I'm all for the reuse as pet bedding idea. That's where all my sheets, blankets, rugs, towels, quilts go to be reused. Love the idea of making curtains for kids rooms that way.

Great ideas! I have made kitchen curtains out of sheets and I made my first childs crib set out of sheets that I really liked. I covered his crib side panels, quilted the fabric into a blanket and made curtains. It really looked nice.
  • fanfreluche Nov 2, 2011 @ 2:08 am | delete
I use my old bed sheets as rags. I got a few vintage ones (linen with embroideries, really really nice) in bad condition so I cut them to remove the damage part and use them as tablecloth.
  • greenearthy Sep 11, 2011 @ 11:23 pm | delete
I made kitchen curtains with used navy sheet and make beaded tie backs. Beading is my passion.Looks very classy in my yellow kitchen.
  • veryirie Jul 21, 2011 @ 2:44 am | delete
I made some very large floor pillows and used an old sheet cut into one continuous strip and crocheted for the top of the pillows.
  • Becksta Jun 11, 2011 @ 7:00 pm | delete
Don't forget that you can also knit rag rugs with size 10 needles :)
  • Frischy Jun 8, 2011 @ 9:04 pm | delete
This lens has given me lots of ideas of things to do with my old bedsheets. I really do have a lot that need replacing. Some cute summer playclothes would be a good way to reuse them. Thanks for the ideas!

I like your post about resusing the bed sheets. I think I'll make pillowcases this weekend. You can also use the fabric over a bulletin board to add some color and interest.

we turned some of our used sheets as bedding for our pets... we put old foam from an old bed cushion inside a case made from used sheets... our dogs use them during winter as warm beds... :)

I love your lens. Thanks for making it!

I reuse flannel sheets for dust cloths and to clean windows and to polish with. In Florida regular used sheets are great to cover bushes when a freeze warning is issued. I never throw out old sheets. They are just too useful.
  • jumamab Jan 27, 2011 @ 2:31 pm | delete
Love your lens. I make grocery bags out my old sheets.
  • guardianstar77 Jan 21, 2011 @ 7:42 am | delete
Great suggestions for how to reuse old sheets. It amazes me that people don't realize how many "yards of material" are in old sheets. Why throw them into a landfill if they can enjoy at one or two more trips through our lives. Thanks for sharing!
  • NaturalMindset Jan 6, 2011 @ 7:31 pm | delete
Just the ideas we need as we buy new sheets with the January white sales!

When I went away to college, my sister made me a huge laundry bag out of an old sheet. I still use it.

Depending on the sheets, they can also be sold on eBay. I have a regular customer in Japan who buys...used sheets. I guess she is after the American designs; I don't know what she does with them!
