Some rodent pets need toilet paper rolls for two purposes one to use a tunnels that substitute for burrows, the other is so that they can gnore them to wear their teeth down. They get through quiet a few of these items in a week so dont through your toilet roll spools away give them to someone that needs them for their rodents.Tom

As kids we used paper towel rolls as make believe telescopes, our favorite characters were Pirates so we would color the rolls with crayons to make them unique to us,we would then use plastic wrap on the ends secured with rubber bands as the lens. I use my tp rolls as candle moulds. Drip wax onto some wax paper and stick the roll on so it is upright. Wait until the wax dries so it will hold the roll into place. Put some mould release inside the roll. Put the wick in the roll. Then pour melted wax into it. Once it dries, you can slip the candle out.

Well, I guess I can finally let my skeleton out of the closet. A few years ago I had a really nice garden, but cutworms began eating the stalks of several plants. I did a little research on natural ways to get rid of and prevent these nasty critters, and the easiest and most frugal preventive method I found was to dig a shallow hole in the ground, place a TP roll in the hole, then plant a seedling inside the TP roll. The cardboard tube is supposed to last long enough for the seedling to grow throughout the season, preventing the cutworms from climbing the stalk and mutilating it. My dad and brother thought I was nuts when I asked them to save their TP tubes for me, but then every time we visited they had always had a bag full of them. The following spring I wasn't able to start a garden, but I had a butt load of empty toilet paper rolls that I put in the back of a closet. I still don't have a garden, but I am armed and ready for those cutworms when I do start up another garden! I love your lens and all the creative ways of reusing empty paper rolls! Bookmarked and thumbs up. ~Vicki~

Hello, I will be revisiting your lens for more ideas on how to use loo rolls. There were a couple of ideas that reminded me of past events, one was, I have used loo rolls to effectively grow sweet pea seedlings in. This works very well and when the seedling is ready to be planted out, you just plant the whole lot. The second idea was concerning the hamster toys, when I was little I had a hamster called Garfield and we would put loo rolls in his cage for him to play with. One gloomy day we noticed we hadn't seen him for a few days, we dug around in his bedding, pulled out the loo roll and found him stuck inside! he died, poor thing. Anyway, great lens! :)

I answered your poll "Just throw them away," but it's actually more complicated than that. City I live in doesn't recycle that material. It composts it. I would think recycling would be a more responsible option, but they say there's no market to buy the stuff to recycle. Is the market synonymous with waste? Thanks for the wonderfully quirky ideas!

We use them for seed starting. Then the rest of the year, I run them through the shredder and use it as mulch around my veggie garden to control weeds. Since it is heavier than regular shredded paper, I usually don't have any problems with it blowing away.

Excellent ideas for reuse of paper rolls.

We stuff our loo roll cores with timothy hay or oat hay for our guinea pigs. It's so much healthier and more fun than most store-bought piggy treats. (For anyone else who tries this--slit the cardboard tube lengthwise so the piggies can't get their heads stuck in it.) Some of these crafty ideas sound like a lot of fun if the piggies leave any cores for us humans.

Sad to report that my hair elastics were too large and wouldn't stay on the roll. I then tried to make a desk organizer with a bunch of toilet paper rolls and a shoe box but that took up more room than it saved. I'll keep looking for things to do with them. I won't throw them out.
  • SydneyH Sep 19, 2010 @ 10:05 pm | delete
Great ideas. Some of them I knew but there were a lot of new ideas too. I hadn't thought of using them for growing seedlings.
  • ddixonart Sep 16, 2010 @ 7:50 pm | delete
We like to make little puppet characters out of them. You can glue on yarn for hair and really get them detailed, but most of the time, I just draw faces and other details on them for my little boy. He really enjoys them as much as expensive toys! I let him tell me what kind of face to draw on them
  • a_willow Sep 17, 2010 @ 1:38 am | delete

  • Cheryl Aug 18, 2010 @ 5:36 am | delete
I definately had to laugh at some of these cause "who would have thought"? I started collecting the tubes from the toilet paper to use for seedlings, just as decribed here. Well of course, I have collected more than I needed. Thanks for all the great tips and, information you shared. Great recycling projects.
  • martialartstraining Jul 22, 2010 @ 4:27 pm | delete
Some of these ideas are a bit silly but I like some of them. The ones about the cords and the hiding your underwear in your luggage are actually good ideas.
  • a_willow Jul 22, 2010 @ 4:40 pm | delete
I believe you about silly part. But we are all different people with different needs. You might not need a way to store hair bands but girls do. :) This is why this page covers all that ways to reuse Tp rolls. :) Still, I'm glad you find something that will be useful to you.

They're also great for setting out seedlings if you have cutworm problems. Place a roll over a new planting so they just peek out above it, and be sure they're pressed into the soil about 1/2". Saved many a plant in my garden this way.

Great lens! I'm one of those people who are always looking for new ways to use paper rolls and you've given me lots of new ideas. Thanks! 5*s.
Since we heat with wood, ours usually go into the cook stove to start fires, but I've used them for puppets, (pretend) binoculars, musical instruments, and other things. I love the idea for seed starters and packing stockings and underwear. Wait till I show my mother and siblings on my next visit home. What a hoot!

Excellent lens! I use my TP & paper towel rolls in my Worm Factory 360. Red wiggler worms LOVE cardboard, so they munch on them, and I get awesome compost for my garden as an end result. :)

My choice is recycling and/or reusing. I reuse empty tp and paper towel rolls by giving them to my rabbits. Thrown in just plain empty, the bunnies love to toss the rolls and chew on them until they get used up. If I fill the center with a little bit of timothy hay mixed with a little bit of alfalfa (not too much alfalfa - they love it - but it needs to be rationed), poke tiny holes to let a few stems stick out, and squish the ends shut and then throw it in, it becomes a treat as well as a play thing as they chew their way to the hay in the middle of the tube. It's amazing how much fun a rabbit can have with a simple empty roll of tp, or even a sheet of newspaper!

Back in the early '80s there was a crafty lady named Ahleen (the craft glue mogule). She had a little TV program with her daughter, and they were the first people to impress me with their TP Roll Projects. Although I've been here before, this is a great lens and a great share of information that is worth coming back to.

So many great ideas! I'm intrigued by the idea of using a flattened tube as a postal worthy envelope, and I also like the idea of wrapping a tablecloth around a tube to prevent wrinkling. PS/ I know someone who cuts open the toilet paper tubes and uses them to scoop dog poop. Really!

I never knew there were so many uses for paper rolls! While babysitting my twin nieces we made a puppet theatre out of a cardboard box, decorated and all of the puppets were created from paper rolls. They spent hours 'pretending' with those puppets but the best time we had was making them! A great lens. Thank you also for coming a blessing my Green lens.

I love this lens! I didn't know there could be so much use for them. The only thing I've been using toilet paper rolls for (so far) is organizing my hair bands. My kitty likes playing with them too so I craft toys for him using the cardboard. (:
  • World-Wanderer Nov 7, 2009 @ 4:50 am | delete
I have a great Use for them. Fire starting. Fill 75% of it with the flaky peely bits of birch bark, or birch bark scrapings (outer bark only). Then take an ember, a smouldering fungus or bit of char cloth you have ignited using a spark, put this in the empty end and push against the bark (don't burn yourself). Then blow onto the ember. Try and hold the toilet tube using something else or it gets very hot and don't pack the tube too tightly. Keep blowing, even putting your mouth over the end and after a minute or so it will burst into flame :D

Wow. It never occurred to me what I could do with paper tubes.

Just last week I came home from my art class to find that one my my bottles of liquid acrylics had popped open in its plastic bag, spilling paint all over the place. It was a pain to clean up, but the worst part of it is that now I can't tell my paint colors apart, because they're all covered in Quinacradone Burnt Orange. I've spent the last week musing about how I could keep them upright in transport. I may have found a way!

Gerbils love to gnaw these, we haven't had gerbils for years but I still can't bear to throw the tubes away. They make good armatures for paper-mache projects. I made an extra-long extension for my vacuum cleaner to suck ladybugs out of the corners of the ceilings when we had an invasion. Necks for puppets.

Great lens, it's a triumph of creative greeness. About the hampster toys, if you leave it in there they'll chew them into bits and use them for bedding. It cuts down on the cost of caring for them, and it gives the little guys something to do for their own survival, which is good. Supplement with paper from your shredder for a softer mix.

  • Reggie_Marigold Jan 5, 2009 @ 8:33 pm | delete
    Reusing!

Several ideas were new to me and I'll take tehm away with me. Like the electric cords, kindling (I don't have a fireplace, but have friends that do and this could be done as a gift. WaHoo!!!), and what a great idea for Halloween as I typically hand out a bunch of goodies in a ziploc bag - no more!

Neato lens. I'll be back for more.

Hey a very entertaining lens! Loved it! Don't forget that small knawloving rodents like loo roll tubes to play with and chew also! You can fill them with rabbit food for your bunnies and then stuff the ends with hay for them to play with ^__^

Totally unique i never saw anything CLOSE to this anywhere lol awesome lens! =)

I reuse old newspapers by taking two pages (at least a week old) and putting it under two sheets of paper towel as to help absorb the oil from fried foods that i put on top ;)

Old why? The ink won't bleed... the paper towel sheets keep a barrier between the ink/newspaper and the food ;)

What a great lens! I love the idea for keeping cords neat, I haven't used them for that yet. My favorite use is for seed starting in the garden.
  • Carol_Wingert Dec 6, 2008 @ 2:57 pm | delete
I think this lens is fantastic!!! So many uses!

I used the rolls for the cords too....keeps it nice and compact.

I like the suggestion of putting the underwear in for traveling. I roll my clothes anyway and what a way to keep them together!!!

    Keep the ideas coming!

I hope a lot of people will read this lens and apply the tips. There are many good ideas here. I particularly like the idea of using toilet paper and paper towel rolls for sheathing knives - for reasons of safety as well as extending the life/sharpness of the blades. Everyone hates to pull a dull knife out of the drawer when it is needed for cooking. This is a very useful, nice lens.

I love all the craft ideas for kids. My 3-yr old saves them to play with. Now he has new projects. Thanks! :-)
  • confidentkate Nov 8, 2008 @ 6:55 pm | delete
I like your lens... however I'm not too sure how many folks would use toilet paper rolls to wrap up Halloween treats... seems a little unsanitary... but that is just me being a little like "Monk" I guess... :)

omg, your so cool!. i love the paper roll characters, its so cute. 5 stars!

Well, i give my paper rolls to my rabbits. I either cut it in two or three and they love playing it, tossing it around. If i dont cut it, I put their favorite treat inside (like carrots) then stuff it with hay. They would go like crazy digging for the treat.

well now I'm going to be using! this information is unique, so creative, so USEFUL. I travel quite a bit and it's not first class so the uses for packing/traveling, etc. are priceless. I've not been this excited over something so utilitarian EVER. LOL You get a fav and 5 stars from me and I'll be back to read it all again.

I never would have believed I would be 5-starring a lens about toilet paper rolls, but this site is so well put together! It's creative and really contains some great ideas I never would have thought about. Wonderful use of many types of modules too, with Amazon items sprinkled throughout without being over-powering. Very good use of pictures and short paragraphs make this an easy, enjoyable, and educational offering. Wow - nice work! Goes to show all potential lenscrafters that it's not so much about the topic as the presentation!!
  • SudokuNut Oct 22, 2008 @ 7:05 pm | delete
This is an awesome lens! It's amazing how much really useful stuff we throw away. We've used them for protecting seedlings from cutter bugs in the garden before but never actually thought about actually starting the seeds in them. We usually reuse yogurt pots for that.
  • Danica_Ignatowski Oct 22, 2008 @ 4:30 pm | delete

Wow, talk about a lens maintaining focus! You are a master. Tons of great ideas--we usually collect them and take them to the recycling center, but now--oh, the possibilities....:-)
  • pmolinero Oct 17, 2008 @ 7:05 am | delete
If you would have asked me what to do with toilet paper rolls, I would have answered until now: To throw away. Now I learned that there are so many and actually obvious possibilities to reuse them. But most of all I like all these crafting for kids which I will start right from today with my little one. She will be amazed about it. So a big thank you from my daughter and 5* from me. :)
