Here's a free reverse lookup technique that's simple and straight forward.

Most people with cell phones are technologically "adept"and they probably use the internet for something.

Whether it's using eBay, MySpace, posting a resume whatever...they're an internet user to some capacity. And many people have published their cell phone number on the web. Even if they're "afraid of identity theft" and all the rest of it.

But what they likely don't know is that this stuff gets INDEXED by search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

It's easy to connect an actual owner name to something as "anonymous" as a cell phone number.

And here's how:

Simply take their phone number and enter it into Google's search box like this: "xxx-xxx-xxxx" (include the quotes).

Hit "search", and see what comes up.

If nothing, try it without the area code.

If still nothing, then try using "xxxxxxxxxx" instead (no spaces).

If no results appear, then run the same searches on both Yahoo and MSN - each major search site indexes websites differently, and one will have different results than the other.

Nothing? Don't worry

Go to google's "blog search" tool at blogsearch.google.com. Run the number again, with each variation.

Next, we're going to search MySpace (over 180 million members). Go to search.myspace.com and repeat.

Try this at xanga.com.

Last, go to the whocalled.us and whitepages.com - just to make sure that the number isn't listed somehow with a legitimate phone directory.

Okay, if you can't find anything using this technique so far, most likely you are not going to find out anything more for free.

(Well, you could always CALL the number - from a payphone - and do some play acting if you feel like it...)

I also like the fact that you can run a partial search before ordering a full record on the number to see if the number is in the database to start with.
