Common Foot Pain Complaints and Solutions

In this lens, Ideal Feet reviews a few of the more common sources of foot pain that we see every day. In addition, we go beyond the problems and give an introduction to the treatments available for each specific complaint.

When Your Feet Hurt, Everything Hurts

Every day our feet are subjected to some of the harshest wear and tear of any part of the body. While often ignored and overlooked, the moment that we start to feel pain in our feet is a quick reality check on just how much we depend on healthy, strong toes, heels, and soles to carry us throughout our day.

Here are a few of the most common problems that results in foot pain, as well as the treatments recommended to get you back into shape.

1. Gout - arthritic patients have higher levels of uric acid in their body that can agitate the toes resulting in swelling and severe pain. Gouty arthritis typically centers on the big toe and is the ranked as one of the leading cause of inflammation for patients over the age of 40.

Treatment:

Gout can be very difficult to handle and at best patients are advised to take a breather to calm the pain and rest the body. Certain medications such prednisone or colchicone as well as pain relievers are prescribed to help cope with the painful throbs. Given their high uric acid content, persons affected by arthritis are also given a regimented diet plan to control their condition.

Bunion - more scientifically known as the hallux valgus, a bunion is triggered by an abnormal bump along the lines of the foot, specifically near the area of the big toe. Because of the bunion's irregular size, it can bend the big toe causing it to overlap and press with the other bones which in turn will result in pain and tenderness. This specific foot problem is most prevalent among women and is attributed by a number of factors which includes weak foot mechanics, flat feet, deformities on the toes and ill sized shoes.

Treatment:

Women with bunions need to steer clear of extremely tight shoes and go for those that give the toes enough room to breathe and wiggle. Shoe padding, arch supports, orthotic inserts and physical therapy are just some of the simplest means to remedy this condition.

3. Hammer Toe - easily diagnosed for its hammer-like structure, this abnormality commonly targets the second, third and fourth toe. While some cases may stem from congenital disorders, its most common causes are credited with wearing high heels and improperly fitted shoes.

Treatment:

A change in shoe size and preference readily addresses this condition. When possible, avoid wearing high stilettos and opt for footwear with softer insoles. Doctors can also manipulate or regulate your affected toes to restore the joints into their proper order and shape.

4. Ingrown Toenails - this uncomfortable foot dilemma occurs when the skin on the side of the toenail curl down and rake into the toe making it swell. Often the result of poorly trimmed toenails and shoes that dig into the feet, this issue can at times lead to infection and intense pain.

Treatment:

Soaking the affected foot in lukewarm water can help soften the troubled area. To prevent it from digging onto the skin, apply a small piece of gauze in between your nail and skin.

These are just some of the different types and causes of foot pain that affects millions of individuals daily. While most of them are non-threatening, they still warrant immediate attention to prevent these conditions from impeding your ability to move and work.
