The Mummy Or Ramses The Damned
Romance and Horror Combine
BUY: The Mummy or Ramses the Damned
The story starts in Egypt as archeologists dig up one of the oldest tombs in existence. Rice of course does a masterful job of explaining every step and giving a breath of life to the environment. The story quickly moves from excavation to murder after the discovery of a mummy making everyone wonder if the murder is some how related to a curse placed on the tomb. Before the murder the archeologist Lawrence begins reading papyri scrolls found with the tomb that suggest the mummy has never been dead and is actually a protector of Egypt.
After the murder the mummy is brought back to London with the murderer. Placed in the archeologists home with his daughter the mummy comes alive for the sole purpose of saving the daughter from the man who killed her father the archeologist. The murderer runs out and pretty much becomes truly insane.
Now that the mummy is alive this is where the book really begins to shine. The way Rice places a true personality on this mummy who rather than walking around in rags moaning uses the sunlight for strength returning to his former glory. The mummy is named Ramses one of Cleopatra's lovers. He has a very seductive demeanor and you are able to walk with him as he catches up on the last two thousand years. As he sees everything for the first time it will feel as though you are seeing everything for the first time. Quickly you will become worried about his well being and as they travel back to Egypt allowing him to place closure on his past you will be taken for a ride.
Now the story begins to take off and I really don't want to give to much away. This is not a normal mummy story with the average gruesome murder especially from what you would expect from a mummy. What Rice does is bring the Mummy up to speed with the vampires and what I mean by this rather than being a creature of boring moaning and nothing special she gives the mummy a human body. The only thing that separates this mummy from you or I is the fact that it is immortal. There lies the whole reason behind the book placing the question what would the reader do if they were actually able to chose between being immortal or mortal. Before reading this book I would have taken immortality, but after reading I may take a second look. I highly suggest reading this book if you liked any of her previous books she does an amazing job filling the story with circumstances that will pertain to your everyday life.
