Review The Author - Debra Shiveley Welch

Once an author puts their name on a book most people think the hard part is done. In today's world that is hardly the way things go. Authors have to become public relations experts, social networking gurus, marketing mavens and learn how to juggle the fine art of writing with the gentle act of schmoozing. Once a book has been released it now has to find an audience. Most of the time that is up to the author. Reviews4Reviews.com is a website designed by an author to help authors bring their books to new audiences. Through our Review the Author series we get the chance to ask some questions the allow us to get to know the author and might bring in new readers. We then publish this interview on many sites.

This is my chance to bring to you a very interesting conversation that I had the chance to have with Debra Shiveley Welch, the author of 4 books.

I started out by asking for a little background information

Born in Columbus, Ohio, I now live in Westerville with my husband of 24 years, Mark, my 18-year-old son, Christopher, our elderly dog, Kelly and attitudinal cat, Emma.

We live on a beautiful lake, in which we take great pleasure. My husband is retired and my son is a sushi chef in an upscale, Japanese restaurant.

Then I asked her for a brief bio

I am the author of four books: Cedar Woman, a fictional account of the life of a daughter of the Lakota Sioux who opens the first high-end Native American Restaurant in the Greater Columbus Area. Filled with Native American beliefs, ceremonies and the language of The People, it reveals Lena Cedar Woman's loves and passions; A Very Special Child, a well-received children's book which was awarded the FaithWriters Gold Seal of Approval - Outstanding Read Award, Son of My Soul - The Adoption of Christopher, a memoir and winner of the AllBooks Review Editor's Choice 2010, FaithWriters Gold Seal of Approval, Books & Authors Excellence in Literature and Best Non-Fiction Book 2007 awards, and Jesus Gandhi Oma Mae Adams, my first novel, co-authored with Linda Lee Greene, a murder mystery. All are available through Saga Books www.sagabooks.net, Amazon and Barnes & Noble and have made the Best Sellers list on Amazon and Amazon Japan.

“How long have you been writing?”

A third generation poet, I have been writing since age nine. In my early twenties, I wrote a poetry column for the Baltimore Eagle Gazette. Later, I worked as editor for several newsletters, including as development editor for The Parent Connection for The League Against Child Abuse. Recently, my article "Your Son is Incapable of Learning" was published in USA Today.

Can you give us a brief synopsis of each of your books?

Son of My Soul: the Adoption of Christopher

is the story of a woman's journey through loneliness, poverty and neglect, her triumph over a turbulent past, and the joy of mothering her adopted child.

Ms. Welch's autobiography begins with her uncle's prophecy of her birth, and soon turns to a story of sorrow and abuse. A vow made at fourteen-years-of-age to save a child through adoption gives her new purpose, as she strives to survive a life of neglect and abandonment.

Breaking free from her past, she thinks of her childhood as "boot camp," and applies the lessons she learned as an example of how not to mother her future child.

Her joy is finally manifested in the form of an infant boy born with cleft lip and palate. She realizes that her vow has indeed come to fruition, and that she has finally found "The Son of Her Soul." Read the reviews here: http://www.debrashiveleywelch.net/soms.htm

A Very Special Child

In this warm and tender story, Debra Shiveley Welch lovingly tells of the Lord giving attributes to a yet unborn child while in the womb of a frightened, young girl. God takes some sweetness from the Cherubs, sweet music from the birds, laughter from the dolphins, and wraps them in love from the birth mother, placing it all carefully into the spirit of the unborn babe. A beautiful gift of life waiting to be unwrapped and cherished and placed in the arms of a loving mother and father. In this special keepsake edition, a collection of essays and poems are also included.

WHY do you write?

It's in my blood. I've always been in love with the sound and meaning of words, the way sentences connect to form a picture, the way you can move a reader by telling a story.

It's my way of making music.

Just a few more questions

  • What do you find to be the most challenging part of writing?

It depends on each work. The novel I am working on now, Ista Numpa, is the sequel to Cedar Woman, written at the request of my readers. In this project, I must endeavor to maintain the tenor and mood of Cedar Woman and honor Ista Numpa, the main character of this work, as I have honored Lena Cedar Woman in Cedar Woman.

As I was not planning to write Ista Numpa, I am really starting from scratch, so I've had to ask my muse to work over time!

I also find research a challenge. There is so much misinformation on the web, that it takes a true dedication to finding the truth to establish exactly what is, and what is not fact. Thankfully, I have my consultant, my sister, Julie Spotted Eagle Horse, to help me in representing The People correctly and with honor.
  • What do you find to be the most rewarding part of writing?

Watching the story unfold, seeing your ideas manifest and fill the page, as well as the feeling of satisfaction as you approach the end of your tale.
  • Do you edit as you write?

I constantly edit. I have written an article, "Creating Your First Book" in which I admonish - edit, edit, edit.
  • How do you develop your characters?

I take them from people I know. For instance, Cedar Woman is a cousin of mine mixed with my adoptive sister. Cedar Woman's son is a mix of my son and my sister's. It helps to keep the characters real.

I describe the characters whenever appropriate. I want my readers to "see" my characters as well as hear them.
  • What do you do for fun?

I cook with my son and we like to go out and eat as well. We are thrilled that he has landed a job in our favorite upscale Japanese restaurant and will be interning there the next school year.

We love to watch cooking shows together and putting together a delicious meal.

My husband and I enjoy museums, flea markets and antique stores, and go whenever we can.
  • Who are your favorite authors? Why?

Taylor Caldwell taught me how to write so that my readers hear, see, feel and even taste what I do. Barbara Taylor Bradford taught me how to write a saga. James Michener taught me how to research and Stephen King taught me how to make the short sentence work.

I love Coleen McCullough's sense of history and Andrew Greeley's ability to weave an intricate tale. Dean Koontz can write a female character as if he were inside her head (read Whispers) and he has taught me how to climb into my characters. Last but absolutely not least, Shakespeare! The poetry of his words will never be duplicated. He is breathtaking!
  • Do you have any new books coming out soon?

Cedar Woman was released this past December, so I hope to have Ista Numpa completed by the end of this year. I'm excited about this book, which address domestic abuse among other topics.

Based on a true character, Ista Numpa promises to be an enlightening read and I'm itching to get started on the actual writing. Right now, I'm gathering information on the real Ista Numpa as I write my outline.

My next two projects are Christopher's Family Table, which will be a companion book to my memoir Son of My Soul - The Adoption of Christopher and Chris' memoir Just Chris and a mystery thriller, Heads Are Gonna Roll which will combine reincarnation with murder and revenge.
