Step through

Discover how writing is not only fun, but profitable

Practical and fiction writing are just as important as they once were. With many journalist publications pondering online data transmission instead of the traditional paper method, the demand for competent writers for the internet has never been stronger.

Fiction writers are now in a unique position to self publish and produce professional looking versions of their products. Now is a fantastic time to write that novel or story and put it into book form.

Before you start writing...

The things you did to make it worth it

You'll want to identify what you hope to accomplish. The world of copy writing is competitive and you may find yourself outclassed very quickly. If you want to dive into fiction writing, you may find that it's hard to create an idea and stick to it.

You won't need very much, just paper and a pen, or a computer. The important thing is to write in the format you feel most comfortable with. Any writer will tell to write in a place that is comfortable as well. This is important because you'll need moments to concentrate, and moments to day dream.

Many writers find a tape recorder invaluable, and I highly recommend purchasing a small one. At times, you'll find that you cannot write or type faster than your brain is processing information. It's helpful to be able to communicate your ideas, and often brainstorming out loud makes for interesting listening later.

You'll also need a brain. This sounds silly, but you really do need to be in touch with your own mind. Being able to think and arrange ideas is crucial if you hope to write well and capture someone's attention.

You'll also need a book. This could be any book. If you don't read, you had better start. Any accomplished writer will tell you that the number one teacher, when it comes to writing technique, is the work of others.

Once you've gotten all of these materials together, the last thing you'll need is a commitment. This commitment must be made to yourself, and it should involve expanding your vocabulary, writing a page a day, being unafraid of your own ideas, and promising yourself you will follow through.

Article Writing

Building Web Content

When designing a website, it's important to have solid content that will help sell your ideas and persuade potential clientele. Without doing proper research on your market, you could be missing out on chances for a higher conversion rate if you neglect your own writing and research. When we use the articles of others, we give our users something to read, but what is really accomplished?

Nobody knows how to sell what you're selling better than you do. If copywriting acts like a sales pitch to our end users, make sure you've got a sales pitch that's working overtime. Lay out the benefits to your products and services as only you know how. Time and time again, personal testimonials have sold products because of their ability to outline the unfamiliar. Draw the readers in and reassure them by outlining what you do and how you do it.

Copywriting is about selling an idea. If the idea is yours it will be difficult to find someone else to rephrase that idea and package it. It's important for you to develop a knack for article writing as it will help you get your point across more effectively. Use terminology specific to the market to qualify yourself and challenge the reader's preconceptions about the market.

Article writing is not a simple process, and revisions will help you see holes in your ideas. It's important to bring things full circle. I like to think of articles as the process of telling a story. The story is almost always the same, "this is who I was until I found magic product/service 'X'. Because X is so easy to use and features all of this neat stuff, I am a new person." Of course, sales letters do differ, but this standard format can act as a nifty beginning to any and all desperate article writers looking for a proper place to begin.

Remember that articles are a facet of your website and are judged by your users. Make sure they are in pristine condition. Take the time out of your day to fix typos and ensure proper grammar. When your users see a website that has content that sounds qualified and professional, you'll be glad you did. A typo may not make or break a sale, but imagine how that reflects upon your website. These minor issues are a sign of laziness and a lack of concern for your work.

Take time and form your own articles. The process can be time consuming, but when the users find articles tailored to fit your sit instead of generic articles written by someone else, you may see a higher conversion rate. Professionalism is one of the many aspects of a good Internet marketer, so bring that professionalism to your website with well written copy that addresses your market.

Write a Stronger Headline

Capture the reader's attention

A good headline doesn't come over night; the old adage about Rome comes to mind. It's important to really think the headline through to its fullest. After all, a poorly constructed headline could lead potential readers astray. Read on and you'll find "important techniques on writing eye catching headlines.

The headline has to stand out. If it doesn't grab the reader, you'll lose their attention immediately. It's important to use forceful language in your headline. You don't want to offend your readers, but an appeal to their shock value may get you more hits than a tame headline. Don't be afraid to openly challenge your reader or make outlandish claims, so long as you know the material in your article and on your site qualifies you.

Use sub headlines to augment your article's headlines. There's nothing better than an outlandish claim backed by an invitation for the reader to prove it wrong. Play off of the impulse to disprove and disbelieve. You're readers are already unsure, so let them know that it's ok to question the foundations of your premise. You'll be thankful once they've read some of your content looking for holes in your original statement.

The headline should always be at the top, and should be in larger text. Those of us that are hip to the web design process know the value of header tags. Header tags can be used in conjunction with the settings defined on your css sheets to give style and color to your headlines, thus separating the headline from the text. Remember that the headlines are like points, or reminders to the reader to stop and check things out a bit closer, so distinguishing the headline from the text may help to create a more streamline read.

Headlines are easily identifiable points in your argument. Headlines should be the most important and persuasive language in your text. If you are writing for the purposes of SEO, you'll want to make sure your headlines have their keywords in them. Without keywords, a user has no road map with which to navigate your site.

Though devising the best headline for you can take time and effort, by paying close attention to your selling tactics, headlining can be fun and easy. Make sure you are trying your hardest to grab the reader's attention by challenging them with a strong call to action. Focus your headline on provoking the reader to read on in the text and the rewards will be quick to follow.

Organizing your thoughts

Craft a true beginning, middle, and end

One of the bigger challenges a writer faces is the challenge of crafting a beginning, middle, and end. This is the process for creating round characters and a full story. You can apply this technique to article writing as well. It's important to make your point, explore it, and cap it off with an intelligent closing.

For the beginning, don't try to imagine it, close your eyes and visualize the idea you're working with. If you're writing a story, start with a sentence or a word. Let your technique flow and focus on not breaking it up. If your brain starts to run out of ideas, jump start it with music.

The beginning is one of the more difficult portions, but remember that editing can make even a mediocre sounding intro very powerful. The lesson here is that if it doesn't feel right, it's ok because you can make it right.

After going through the beginning you are faced with the body of the story. This is your time to explore your characters or explore your topic. During this time, you want to show off as many facets of your idea as you possibly can. The more conflict you create, the more readable the text becomes.

During the middle, it's important to just get it out there. A lot of the story you craft won't be used in the final draft, so don't be afraid to put it out there. The more you write, the more you have to edit and work with. It's always easier to cut and edit than it is to explain why you have tons of typos and your writing wanders.

Once you have crafted a portion of the middle, look for a place to logically close the action. Even if the story or article isn't coming together properly, reconnect with your original starting idea and close it out. Once you've gotten a chance to finish it and step away, you'll have more insight into how to properly construct the beginning, the middle, and the end.

Illustrated on a YouTube video

Charles Bukowski wrote a poem everyday in order to sustain himself. Much of his life was miserable, and much of that was of his own doing. Writers do not have to live in a pit of despair, but even in the lowest of lows, they need to be able to produce a page every day.
