6 Steps To Minimize Your Credit Card Debts and Maximize Its Rewards

All of us can get excited with the promise to earn more or get rewarded from our credit card spending. Credit cards with reward programs are definitely great but every reward credit card holder must also be aware of how to avoid its dangers and how to use it to their advantage.

True, if you don't use your reward credit card wisely, you can get easily stuck in credit card debts. Nevertheless, there are ways to minimize the risks and maximize your rewards. Let's talk about these steps one by one.

1. Choose a reward credit card with the right reward program. There are a variety of reward programs available for you to choose from - Frequent Flyer Miles Rewards, Gas Rewards, Hotel Rewards, and Cash Back Rewards credit cards. The question is, which type of reward program best matches your lifestyle and spending?

2. Read and understand your Credit Card Agreement. Did you take the time to read the fine print before submitting your credit card application? If not, you could've made the wrong credit card choice. Unfortunately, a lot of credit card holders rush into signing up for the cards they thought were great without reading the agreement in full. Remember that the true rates, costs and terms of your credit card are all stated in your contract so read the fine print no matter how small it is or how inconvenient it is.

Top Five Credit Card Mistakes

How you can avoid them

When you're dealing with credit cards, you're playing with fire. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people out there who don't realise that, and make all sorts of dangerous mistakes with their credit cards every day.
Paying Late.

If you don't set up any kind of automatic payment, then it can be tempting to just put your credit card bill on a pile and get to it when you have time. Before you know it, a few weeks have gone by and you're late. If you leave it to the deadline, you might find that the payment won't get there quickly enough - it's not a deadline for sending the money, it's a deadline for them receiving it.

Paying late is a big mistake for an awful lot of reasons. You will almost certainly be charged a late payment fee, and your late payment will go on your credit report for everyone to see. You may also find that you lose any good rate you had, and your debt is automatically thrown onto the very worst rate the company offers.

Rewards Credit Card: Travel For FREE

One of the most popular reward credit cards are travel reward cards. Generally, travel reward card members gain points each time they use their credit card to purchase airline tickets, to pay for their hotel accommodations, for going on a cruise, for renting cars and of course, when purchasing items from affiliate merchants. These points are collected until the minimum number of points is reached that qualifies the card holder for a free travel.

5 tips to improve your credit score

Latest News from Yahoo Finance

by: Henry Hebeler

If you've pulled your credit score and are disappointed by what you see, here are some simple things you can start doing now to improve your score. Credit counselor Bruce McClary of Richmond, Va., suggests these five ways to boost your credit score.

1. Get it right
2. Pay your bills on time
3. Step away from the edge
4. Commit for the long haul
5. Look before you leap

1. Get it right
Accuracy is the first thing to address and the fastest way to boost your score. Find and fix any mistakes that could be pulling your score down. Your credit score is based on the information contained in your credit reports. "For someone who has never seen a credit report or hasn't checked in several years, I recommend getting all three and looking at all of them, because each contains different information," says McClary. For those who check regularly, use the free credit reports to monitor your accounts. Stagger your requests for the free reports so you see one every four months. "With ID theft running rampant, it seems like you need to check more often these days," McClary says. "Maybe once a year isn't enough anymore."

Credit Cards for the Well-Heeled

Source: Latest News from Yahoo Finance

BySonja Ryst, Special to TheStreet.com

Tom Pallack, a retired software company CEO, decided he wanted an American Express Centurion credit card when he was at the Sundance Film Festival a few years ago.

Because the seats to the movies at the festival are first-come, first-serve, people often stand in line for at least an hour to see the most popular shows. But Pallack noticed that while everyone else was waiting in the cold weather, the Centurion cardholders got bused right to the theaters and given the best seats.

When he talked to people who held the card, they told him he could use it for meeting celebrities. Soon enough he was signed up for the Centurion, sitting at a dinner table with several others like him and Robert Redford. "It gives me access," Pallack says. "I'm able to do things that with just pure money I can't do."

Tips for Frequent Flyer Miles Credit Card Holders

Do you own a frequent flyer miles credit card? If yes, this article is made especially for you. Here, let's talk about how you can avoid complications and make the most out of your frequent airline rewards credit card.

One of the most common concerns among frequent flyer miles credit card holders is the availability of flights. When it comes to making reservations, you may be surprised to find that booking your flight is not a very easy procedure. By the time you're entitled to claim your free travel ticket, you may be hindered by an unavailable flight to your chosen destination. This is true not only during peak travel seasons. Although some destinations are not as crowded, you can experience booking hassles especially if you're flying on a popular airline or is taking a trip to favorite vacation spot.

The fact is, most airlines allot only a limited number of seats for frequent flyer miles passengers. Because it does take a while before a card holder can earn the minimum required points and qualify for a free travel, carriers reserve only a few seats for frequent flyer card holders. So how can you avoid such hassles and head aches upon claiming your free travel reward?

Plan Early

The best way to enjoy your travel reward is to plan ahead and prepare early. Start by choosing the right travel reward credit card for you. If you're not a frequent traveler, consider getting a card with a generic frequent flyer program. A generic travel program gives you the option to claim for free travel ticket from any airline. Since you're not just limited to one specific carrier, it would be easier to book your flight and redeem your free travel reward. Examples of credit cards with Generic Miles Programs are the Chase Travel Plus Platinum Visa Card, Capital One No Hassle Miles Card and the Miles Card from Discover.

Nevertheless, if you are a frequent traveler, it would be a sensible choice to have a credit card that is affiliated with one specific airline. This is because aside from miles points, card holders are also entitled to claim other travel perks and privileges like hotel rate discounts, car rental discounts, etc. Most frequent flyer credit card programs also offer its holder the chance to double their miles points and collect points more easily.

In any case, always take the time to study your options with your particular travel reward credit card. Be particularly aware about the restrictions imposed by your travel credit card issuer. Will you miles points expire if you're not able to use it within a given period? Or is it possible to carry over your points for the next period or the next year? Remember, if your travel reward credit card requires you to redeem your free ticket for just a limited period, there is a possibility that you lose your chance when making flight reservations become a problem.

Tips To Get A Maximum Reward From Your Credit Card
