The story was delightful! I read it aloud to my husband, then watched him wipe away tears. For some reason, the Cinderella story always touches his heart. The accompanying music was perfect. Thank you.

P.S. This lens is so good, and such a unique use of Squidoo, that I just had to nominate it for Lens of the Day. I hope others finding this comment will take a moment to join me. The nomination form can be found on SquidooHQ, or search Squidoo for Megan Casey's "Secret Life of Lens of the Day."
  • Graceonline Jul 16, 2011 @ 5:32 am | delete
If there had been an "I love it!", I'd have picked that in the poll. What a beautiful reshaping of an old fairy tale. Is it available in book form? I'd buy a copy for every one of my grandchildren and one for myself.

As for that glass slipper, even as a child, I questioned its wearability. Always knew it would break. Nice to know that in the original tale, that slipper was pure gold. But then, gold is soft. Could it withstand a night of dancing?

I love this CInderella story so much and one of my favorite fairy tales.
You are such a gifted writer and should publish children's story books or ebooks. This was such a fun read( I did this at work because it distracted me) and I hope you write more of the same.

I love changing stories like this, and you did an amazing job.

Have you ever read Gregory Maguire? He wrote Wicked, the Wizard of Oz through the eyes of the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so bad.

    Nice work.
  • spritequeen Nov 10, 2010 @ 8:28 pm | delete
Great story! You're very talented! You should get it published in a book! (not just here)

    Joan,
Have you considered publishing this as a kid's book? I think it would be great! If you would like to, you could even self-publish online, like at http://www.hulu.com or at http://www.wordclay.com. We need children to learn that being aware of other people around them, and the situations in which people live and work, can lead to having a caring heart and being able to have empathy for others. This story shows this and shares it as a natural order of things (for some personalities, which children can also learn from). I love it, and I really believe that this is a story that needs to be shared!
    God bless,
    Bonnie

love it! have you ever noticed that ALL disney movies either kill, leave out or include an evil (step) mother?
  • _Joan_ Sep 9, 2010 @ 10:25 am | delete
Wow! I didn't realize that. I'm not too familiar with the Disney princess genre. I wonder what they might think is the subconscious appeal of a motherless girl? I'm going to ponder that . . .
  • _Joan_ Sep 9, 2010 @ 10:51 am | delete
One possibility, I think, is that they suppose that the target viewer of the movie (a young girl) envisions herself in the role of the main character. If she has no mother (or a bad mother), then she is the ranking female, facing the world on her own.
  • JoyfulPamela Jun 30, 2010 @ 1:16 pm | delete
Oh Joan ~ this is a beautiful story!! I love it much more than the original story! I can't wait to read more of your stories. :-D
  • Lucy Jun 27, 2010 @ 10:25 pm | delete
this gives me a rather more POSITIVE outlook to talk about in my speech
  • JoanneOtt May 27, 2010 @ 9:50 pm | delete
Very well done. It's nice to have a tale that is positive and had a great role model of a stepmother.
  • vallain Apr 21, 2010 @ 8:17 am | delete
Very well written and you fitted in elements from the original Cinderella, yet made your characters stand on their own. Lovely.
  • WordCustard Apr 21, 2010 @ 7:44 am | delete
I didn't just like this, I LOVED it! Simply enchanting. The original fairy tales were very dark and some of that has been moderated over the years, but this tale is full of light and sparkle and happiness. Why should the step-mother not be kind, and the step-sisters not have good hearts? I loved the twist of the tale with the godmother too. I cannot help but leave a Fairy Godmother... er, no... *~*~ Angel Blessing ~*~* here for your rewrite of Cinderella.
  • KCottrell Dec 9, 2009 @ 9:08 pm | delete
Oh beautiful . . . as a woman who lost her own mother at the age of 24, I cried when you wrote of Sarah offering up the emerald necklace. What a beautiful gesture from the stepmother to her stepdaughter, preserving the memory and honor of the mother. Aaah, kudos for holding us all to a standard of kindness, respect, and peace.
  • Carmel_Aaron Dec 2, 2009 @ 2:51 pm | delete
Thank you. I loved it that all the main characters were good and kind.
    Even the stepmother.

I also liked the part that Cinderella had a brain, a conscience
and a desire to make a difference.

You tell the story very well.

    Thank you,

    5 Stars

What a great way to retell a well known story! If only the people who try to make new movies out of old movies and TV shows had some of your talent! :)
  • Tiddledeewinks Aug 16, 2009 @ 11:37 pm | delete
I know because I remarried that my grown daughter and ex have treated me with such hate, that the world could use a better story like this. Not all step-relationships are bad. My ex and daughter need to stop the jealousy.

I loved your lens! Thanks for putting all the effort into writing that story! I have become really interested in the power of story in healing, the wicked stepmother myth is one that could do with some positive changes. I'm sure you are putting a lot of good work into your blended family.

Please see my book review of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire.

    http://www.squidoo.com/confessionsofanuglystepsister
He focused most on the stepsisters, but portrayer the stepmother as a survivor.
And that ezine article on glass slippers was hilarious.
