Richard was orn in Philadelphia on August 31, 1949. He was raised in upstate New York. After high school Gere attended the University of Massachusetts where he studied philosophy and film.

But acting is not the only thing Gere is famous for.

What About Gere's Personal Life?

Sorry ladies - he's married! He is married to Carey Lowell who was a well-known fashion model, then a TV star in Law And Order and A League Of Their Own, as well as roles in Sleepless In Seattle and Leaving Las Vegas. Their son, Homer James Jigme, was born in 2000. Jigme means "fearless" in Tibetan.

As a celebrity he has the ear of a large audience. Richard is a famous Buddhist. Gere has crusaded for the freedom of Tibetan's to practice their religion. He appeals regularly to the Chinese to allow His Holiness the Dalai Lama return to his country.

Since I am also a Buddhist, Richard Gere is one of my favorite people! I have been in many teachings with the Dalai Lama where Gere also attended.

He has also acted in documentaries such as Return to Tibet, and Shadow Over Tibet: Stories in Exile and a new one Beyond Fear (see below). In 1997 Gere starred in Red Corner as a victim of a completely corrupt Chinese court system.

Gere is also co-founder of Tibet House along with Robert Thurman, Uma Thurman's father, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan culture. See the link list below to pursue more on Richard's philanthropic activities.

Richard Gere's Most Recent Movie is Amelia

Amelia is about the famous pilot Amelia Earhart and stars Hilary Swank as the legendary American pilot who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 in an attempt to make a flight around the world. Richard Gere plays publisher and promoter George Putnam, who Earhart eventually married. It also stars Ewan McGregor.

I pretty much love anything Richard Gere performs in, but I am also a female pilot and Hilary Swank does a great job also in this film. Enjoy!

TV Documentary on Tibet

With an opening by Richard Gere, this award winning television documentary film highlights the remarkable courage of Ngwang, a Buddhist Nun and Badgro, a Buddhist monk who at the ages of 13 and 20, led freedom demonstrations against the Chinese in Tibet. They were arrested and horribly tortured but inspired by the Dalai Lama, they harnessed the power of positive thinking and found a way beyond fear. After Ngwang, along with other nuns, smuggled out a tape of freedom songs that reached the West, it galvanized the international community into action. Amnesty, ICT, SFT and The Office of Tibet instituted a global campaign that culminated in Ngwang's release. This powerful film is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Tibetan people, what action people can do now to help free Tibet and the power of postive thinking.

Gere has his own charity to fund raise for the Tibetan cause. Healing the Divide, the public arm of Gere Foundation, is working across a wide range of issues: from the growing HIV/AIDS crisis in Asia to the need for prison reform and effective post-release programs in the U.S., from poverty alleviation, education and cultural revitalization in the Himalayan region to supporting non-violent approaches to peace in the Middle East.
