I'm not sure why a state that is clearly not an island is called Rhode Island, but I do know it's home to buried treasure to the tune of $124 MILLION.  Okay, it's not so much "buried", as it is "sitting in government offices" and it's not "treasure" as much as it is forgotten money, but you get the point.  Rhode Island unclaimed money is there for the taking once you learn how to find it.

According to the RI General Treasurer, unclaimed money in Rhode Island is defined as follows:

Unclaimed property consists of money and other assets that are considered lost or abandoned after an owner cannot be located for a specific period of time. It includes bank accounts; stocks and dividends; wages; refunds; safe deposit boxes; insurance payments; gift certificates; credit memos; account receivable credits and payables, just to name a few.



The office of the general treasurer also explains why an unclaimed property law is necessary:

The unclaimed property law is designed to collect, safeguard and return lost or forgotten property to its rightful owners. Each state has similar laws.



And they offer a bit of insight in to how long various account types must be dormant before being considered forgotten or "unclaimed":

Most property is turned over to the Treasury if it has been inactive for three years. However, wages and utility deposits become unclaimed after one year.
