Rythmic Gymnasts: The Unsung Heroes of The Olympics

On the day of the opening of the 2008 Olympics, this lens is dedicated to the unsung heroes, the athletes who train, whose skill is unrivaled, yet are ignored or even ridiculed.

The women of rhythmic gymnastics are amazing athletes. Their athleticism is hard to match. Watch these videos and try to picture Kobe Bryant doing any of the amazing performances.

Like synchronized swimmers they are often ignored or the butt of jokes. People have said that they don't belong in the Olympics! You will soon know that nothing could be further from the truth!

First Awe and Then Respectful Awe

Like many people I didn't think much of these beautiful women, with false eyelashes and sparkle who played with balls and ribbons and batons. Of course, I had never really seen it either. And because of that I relegated it to the realm of synchronized swimming. Of course, I was wrong about that too, but that's another story.

The first time I actually watched it, was the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. I was captivated. I think there was something about Barcelona with the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, that fit with rhythmic gymnastics. The word gaudy was coined to describe the buildings of Barcelona, and somehow that made the stage for this sport.

However,it was impossible to ignore the athleticism of these women. I was awestruck.

Before the Atlanta Olympics in Atlanta, I had wanted to write an article about these women, but there was little internet to do research, no YouTube videos, and well, no Squidoo to publish the article.

Since this is such a visual sport, virtually impossible to describe much of the lens will be video. And frankly, there are probably too many words alreeady. Just watch.

Is Rhythmic Gymnastics a "Real" Sport deserving a spot in the Olympics?

Some have questioned the validity of having sports like this in the Olympics saying that it is nice and all, but not really a competitive sport.

Does Rhythmic Gymnastics Belong in the Olympics

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

YES! It is as athletic as any other sport, more than some.

GregGiordano says:

My girls loved the artistic gymnastics competitions during the Olympics because they were all on prime time. If we saw five minutes of rythmic gymnastics that was a lot. This sport deserves the same recognition as any other sport.

JaguarJulie says:

As much as beach volleyball does! Or snowboarding. ;) I personally did floor gymnastics as a teenager and it's not that EASY! My sister was the star and probably could have been Olympic-bound. She also played the flute in competition AND was an award-winning commercial artist. No sibling rivalry as I had my own kind of talent(s). Great lens!

Kanga says:

Absolutely! I could never do the things they do, they're amazing!

unsinkablewoman/Darlene says:

Yes Why Not they have all kinds of things, Don't they have bobsledding as an Olympics sport ? How can a man on a sled be considered a sport and not Rhythmic Gymnastics

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

Of course! These women train their bodies into the pinnacle of athleticism and then present programs that are highly competitive.

They add something important to the Olympics!

No, its more like ballet, pretty, but not competitive.

I agree, artistic gymnastics get all of the attention but the gymnasts who excel in this sport deserve the spotlight too. Great lens!

It's a pity I only ever get to see rhythmic gymnastics on TV when the Olympics are on! (Much like the horse events...)

I enjoy watching sports whatever it is and rhythmic gymnastics is among the women's sports I enjoy the most. Just looks at those athletes I just amazed what the human body or brain can do.

It just show us that when can achieve what we want to achieve as long we take time to practice and make it as habit until it become just a simple routine. Nice selection of videos. Well done. And thanks for stopping by at my Olympics lens and putting down those nice comment.

My Bio

Squidoo Lens of the Day!

For Arrowsmith Printing 9/22/08

I was born into a small business, I believe that small business and entrepreneurs are the backbone of America and what has made us great. They are what made us great and will save us in these unsure times. I have never wanted to have a great job. Well, better a great one, than a boring dead end one, and I have had both. But I have never really wanted a job at all.

Don't get me wrong, I am a hard worker. I have worked a full-time job, a part time job and a private practice all at the same time for a lot of years in my past. It isn't the work, its the working for someone else. Never wanted to do that, and I don't understand those who want to do that.

When I was six months old my parents bought their first small town weekly newspaper in Iowa. This was back in the day, back when small town newspapers were not just advertising sheets. Perhaps there are still some of them that are real, I hope so.

So I came by this perverse nature naturally. My path to self employment has been different than theirs, but it has always been my path, my direction.

Growing up in Iowa, in the fifties, I also grew up politically conservative. By the time I was 30 I was radically left. Today? I am proudly liberal and what that means will be clearer as we progress.

However, I have had conflicts about 'taking advantage of people'. I now know that employing people is not automatically taking advantage of them, but it took a while for me to learn that nothing is intrinsically good or bad. Well, almost nothing.

I have educated myself in business, I have a small business and I have used EFT and other energy clearing methods to help me clarify the old conflicts and move forward.

My mission here is to provide a forum for people who want to work independently through one person businesses or through employing others and for whom the betterment of human kind is an important value. My lenses are about offering good products, teaching people about betting their lives, and using the money they make for their pleasure and the benefit of others.

That is how I see business and if you have a similar vision I invite you to my blog www.creatingbusinessenergy.com
