RICHARD JENI - The Most Underrated Comedian EVER

Greatest Bits
Audio/CD
Greatest Bits - Richard Jeni is one of the funnier, lesser-known comics in America. His Greatest Bits CD is about the length of a television special, but its economy makes for an enjoyable experience. Richard Jeni is similar to Jerry Seinfeld, but a bit more jaded. "Kiss Your Butt Buenos Noches," "Cooking With Bill," and "I Love Condoms" are funny but lack a universal brilliance to elevate his observations beyond simple jokes. None of the tracks are especially offensive and his witty energy is entertainment, but not too memorable. Definitely worth a listen; a solid fun time, but not a classic. - review written by JT Griffith, All Music Guide
Richard Jeni Quotes
- You're listening to all-driving-complaint-radio. Bustin' your balls from the driveway to the highway. You get all the great hits: Your exit's coming up. Your exit's coming up. Your exit's coming up. Your exit's coming up. And after a while you're going, 'Yeah, well, so is yours.'
- My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch.
- We're all a little bit hypocritical and we could all help people more than we do. You know you're sitting there watching TV, it's late at night. Then you hear: "For $9 a week, you could help this starving child." Everyone has the $9, but how do you not give it to them? You gotta rationalize it somehow. You just go, "Ehh that kid doesn't look that hungry to me. Shit he's got a bigger belly than I do. How you can you feed a kid for $9 a week, that's impossible! Shit a Low-Fat, Low Carb latte is $4.50. Whats that kid gonna do with 2 giant cups of coffee? I'm actually doing him a favor not giving him any money, because there's nothing worse than being wide awake and starving. You're welcome Haboopoo."
- Honesty is the key to a relationship. If you can fake that, you're in.
- The way I see it, we're all on the Hindenberg. Why fight over the window seats?

The New York Times Obituary
March 13, 2007
He was born in the rough area of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, in 1957. Always something of a misfit, he reluctantly ran errands for local young toughs but his quick mind and grasp of language won him a national essay competition and he gained a political science degree at Hunter College.
He went into public relations but was unable to take office work seriously and ended up, at 24, as a taxi driver.
He found his métier when a girlfriend nudged him into a showcase for aspiring comics at a small Brooklyn club. He was not an immediate success, but landed a weekly slot and persevered, honing his act until he started to achieve acclaim.
He first came to national prominence in 1990 with Richard Jeni: The Boy from New York City, for the cable station Showtime, which was nominated for three awards. Two years later he starred in Richard Jeni: Crazy from the Heat, which attracted high ratings. He also became a regular guest on the popular The Tonight Show.
Jeni was then given a place in the HBO comedy hour slot with the award-winning Richard Jeni: Platypus Man, which he developed into a sitcom for the UPN network in 1995. He was also a guest on TV's Everybody Hates Chris and Married: With Children. His last cable comedy special was A Big Steaming Pile of Me in the 2005-06 season.
He developed a busy concert schedule and hosted several cable shows. He also had several minor film roles, the high-light being his acting debut in the Jim Carrey hit The Mask in 1994.
Two years ago he helped to write the script for the Oscars ceremony, hosted by his friend, Chris Rock.
Richard Jeni, comedian, was born on October 31, 1957. He died of gunshot wounds on March 10, 2007, at the age of 49.

Memorial Poem
After Glow
I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one,
I'd like to leave an after glow of smiles when day is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave behind when day is done.

- I was born on the same day & year as Richard, April 14, 1957. I always felt a special connection to Richard & his comedy. This man was a comedic genius. I think he just became bored with life. He need a higher audience, & God got himself one o the greatest comedians who ever lived.

- A great comedian. I got to interview him once. One thing he said during that:
"You know when you are walking into the supermarket, step on that mat, and the doors open? For years I thought that was just a coincidence."
