It's summertime between my fifth and sixth grades...the year is 1988. I've just experienced my first dance outside of elementary school. It's the morning after, and I'm still in a daze from the magical slow dance that I'd just experienced last night with Tara, someone I had a huge crush on...that song was "Hold On To The Nights"...
Since then, I've come to know Richard Marx as a master of soft pop rock; with R&B aftershocks vibrating through his wonderfully pleasant voice. Personal favorites like "Should've Known Better" and "Endless Summer Nights" also dominated my favorite radio station at the time, but it was 1989's "Right Here Waiting" that solidly established Mr. Marx as a pop icon during the era of Paula Abdul, MC Hammer and the New Kids On The Block.
Words cannot express how much I appreciate and enjoy this album because it is so darn pleasant. Other standouts for me are "Angelia" (love this one), "Children Of The Night" (ditto), "Hazard" (lyrically haunting...), "Keep Coming Back" (deliciously bluesy - listen for Luther Vandross!), and "Now and Forever" (extremely sincere, perfect for a wedding).
"Satisfied" and "The Way She Loves Me" rock in a Bryan Adams-ish sort of way, and while these songs aren't personal favorites, they're still irresistable for the zestful vibrancy they communicate.
"Touch Of Heaven" is a pleasant surprise, and Richard's vocals are in top form here - fans of R&B music will definitely appreciate this one. Randy Jackson (yes, Michael's little brother) worked on this one.
...also check out the liner notes on this album; Mr. Marx shares a personal thought about every song. Upon reading this information, it becomes quite clear that Richard Marx is truly a wonderful human being. This is honestly one of the best CDs I have purchased in a long time - totally worth it - expecially for those who like pop, soft rock, or even R&B. Go get it...I mean it. -- Knyte (Chicago, IL)

Richard Marx at a Glance
Richard Noel Marx (born September 16, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois) is an adult contemporary and pop/rock singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He had a string of highly successful hit singles in the late 1980s and 1990s, including "Endless Summer Nights", "Right Here Waiting", "Now and Forever", and "Hazard". Although most of his major hit songs were slow ballads like these, many of his songs had a classic rock style, such as "Don't Mean Nothing," "Should've Known Better," "Satisfied," and "Too Late To Say Goodbye". Marx placed himself in the record books by being the first solo a...

Richard Marx set the standard of adult oriented rock during late 80s through early 90s. After Paid Vacation album in 1993 when he made a huge hit NOW AND FOREVER he seemed to have been cast away from the corporate music world and Flesh and Bone and Days In Avalon could not score huge hits as their pedecessors.
My Own Best Enemy is the strong work that should lead him back to the front I hope. WHEN YOU'RE GONE and NOTHNING LEFT TO SAY has already been minor hits but the best track from the album has not yet introduced. Overall the album is somewhat like when the Paid Vacation went off. Nothing Left To Say is probably the remake(redone) of NOTHING LEFT BETWEEN US nice country rock flavored masterpiece track from PAID VACATION and WHEN YOU'RE GONE the first single might also fit in the aforementioned album. COLDER is the catchy pop rock track that reminds me of debut era Richard. And THE OTHER SIDE my #1 favorite from the album is so touching. FALLING, AGAIN are also my favorites.
It should take some time for you to sink in but it is truly deeply themed and should be listened wide variety of pop rock fans who love Eric Clapton, Bryan Adams, and John Mellencamp. -- susumu-5 (Japan)

I have to admit, I hadn't been listening to Richard Marx for awhile, until a friend of mine reintroduced me to his incredible sound by playing his music over and over when I was around. I had almost forgot how amazing a singer/songwriter this guy was! After I got reacquainted I had to get Days In Avalon. This album is just as wonderful, if not more so, than all of his earlier stuff. The songs range from the slow love ballads like "One More Time" to the more upbeat, positive songs like "Too Early to Be Over." The music is good, but the lyrics are even better. I have listened to it over and over since I got it and it just keeps getting better every time. My favorite songs are "Days In Avalon," "Almost Everything," "Someone Special," "Power of You and Me," "The Boy Next Door" (I always was a "Hazard" fan), "Too Early to Be Over," and "Straight from My Heart" (very country!) In conclusion, I recommend this album for anyone looking for good music written by a truly underrated and talented man. -- Nicole "rockinrenee" (Steubenville, Ohio United States)

I prefer the "rock side" of Richard Marx to the more recent R & B style he turned to in the mid-'90s. That being said, this is probably his best album--with a wonderful variety of rock and pop.
The opening track, "Nothin You Can Do About It", is a crunching rocker which I actually heard briefly on rock radio way back when--proving that Marx was once about more than ballads. Equally as catchy is the second track, the lead single and #1 hit "Satisfied". Then comes another big hit, the beautiful yet still somewhat rock-based "Angelia". Gorgeous song.
Everyone who reviews Richard Marx's greatest hits album says it is an absolutely complete collection. I disagree for one reason: the top 20 hit "Too Late To Say Goodbye", which is the fourth song on this album, was not included. This song is a gorgeous, powerful anthem which to me is one of Marx's best singles ever. At the end of that song comes a soft instrumental that leads right in to the all-time famous ballad "Right Here Waiting".
From that point until the last track, the album is filled with non-hit rockers which are all good to great. "Heart On The Line" and "If You Don't Want My Love" are great, while the haunting, rocking "Wait For The Sunrise" is exceptional. That song to me is truly the best of Richard Marx--a fantastic rocker. Then comes that last track, the also-incredible "Children Of The Night". This song has a touching, heartfelt message not to mention melodic, anthemic sound. Beautiful way to end the album.
Along with certain "pop metal" albums, this album represents the epitome of why "'80s music" was so great and fun to listen to. A nearly perfect blend of the best of melodic pop and rock music of that era. I bought this album when it first came out (just months before I turned 20 years old) and still love it to this day. -- Brad (CT)

Its been a very long time since i've heard most of the songs on this CD. But i still know them like i've been listening to them since day one. There isn't a song on this cd that i dont love. Some of favs on this cd:
Should've Known Better
Don't Mean Nothing
Endless Summer Nights
Hold on to the Nights
Heaven Only Knows
This is by no means a slight to the other songs on the CD. Because quite frankly i listen to and love each and everone of them. I listed those because they kind of felt like. Something that i could agree or identify with. I'm hoping that folks will check this CD out as well as others by Richard Marx like "My Own Best Enemy" his newest CD. -- Derrick Jenkins "Lover of music/anime" (Hampton VA USA)
