The next Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano Thriller

In each soul, a secret . . .

Philadelphia homicide detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano's first assignment from the Cold Case files is the brutal murder of a young runaway. The lifeless body of Caitlin O'Riordan was found carefully posed in a glass display case in the desolate Philadelphia Badlands but, as Byrne and Balzano rapidly discover, she was just the first pawn in the killer's twisted game . . .

A mysterious phone call leads them on a scavenger hunt for a second victim. This time a young girl has been dismembered, her body parts left in three boxes in the basement of a deserted house. More clues lead to other victims and, as the body count rises, it becomes clear that there is a serial killer on the loose, hell-bent on completing the 'performance' of a lifetime.

As more runaways vanish, Byrne and Balzano come to realize that the homicidal mastermind plans to complete seven depraved tricks in his dark and dangerous magic act. With Balzano increasingly obsessed by a case that haunts her, and Byrne struggling with a loss of his own, the stakes are mounting. But this is one game they can't afford to lose . . .

In America, Richard Montanari's fourth book in the Philadelphia Series is titled Badlands: A Novel of Suspense.

In the United Kingdom, that same book has a different title and cover. It's called Play Dead. Already it's spent a couple of weeks on the prestigious Sunday Times Bestseller List.

However, call it Badlands or call it Play Dead -- it's still the same nerve wracking story.

1.) Richard just received his first starred review in Publishers Weekly for his new novel Badlands.

2.) Richard's series about Philadelphia detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano are bestsellers in the United Kingdom, spending a total of twenty weeks on the Sunday Times Bestseller List.

3.) The Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano series has been published in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

4.) The first two books share the same title: Rosary Girls and Skin Gods but the next two have different titles:

4a.) Merciless in the U.S. is Broken Angels in the U.K.

4b.) Badlands in the U.S. is Play Dead in the U.K.

4c.) This has caused some unfortunate confusion among loyal book buyers. They're the same book, just different titles published in different countries.

5.) Richard's first thriller series featured Detective John Salvatore Paris who worked the mean streets of Cleveland, Ohio in pursuit of a sexually deviant serial killer.
