Richard Hovey, past and present.

I am one of the few people who have been called Richard Hovey over the years. This is a collection of references to some of my namesakes.

Richard Hovey

North American Poet

The most famous Richard Hovey 1864 - 1900, was born in Normal Illinois and died in New York following minor surgery.

Richard Hovey (1864-1900) was an American poet. Graduating from Dartmouth College in 1885, he is known in part for penning the school Alma Mater, Men of Dartmouth.

"For surely in the blind deep-buried roots
Of all men's souls to-day
A secret quiver shoots
Spring"

USS Richard Hovey

Liberty Ship

The USS Richard Hovey was a Liberty Ship built during World War II. It was built by the New England Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland and launched on 14 March 1943 with hull number 0338.
The ship was attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean on 28 March 1944.
I have not yet found out which Richard Hovey provided the inspiration for the name.

Richard "Dickie" Hovey

Musician and Murder Victim

On May 15, 1968, skeletal remains were found in a hedgerow, along a wire fence on a rural side road near Schomberg, Ontario Canada. The victim was lying face down and there was no clothing present, boney arms tied behind his back with a white shoelace. It had been estimated that the remains may have been at this location since late spring to early summer, 1967. The cause of death is not known.

In 2006, these remains were identified to be those of 17-year-old Richard "Dickie" Hovey. Hovey was originally from Fredricton, New Brunswick, and had moved to Toronto in 1967. Hovey was 17 years old at the time of his death. He is described as slight in stature, approximately 5'5" to 5'6". He was a guitar player who was known to have played in clubs in the Yorkville area of Toronto.

Richard Hovey packed his backpack, slung his guitar case over his shoulder, and hitchhiked across Canada in 1967. Then he mysteriously disappeared off the streets of Toronto. With the help of modern forensic science, police using DNA matching were able to confirm that the 17-year-old musician matched the grisly remains of a human skeleton found almost 40 years ago.
