Living in Richland, Washington
Richland residents take a lot of pride in their city, and for good reason. The city boasts a strong school district and higher education facilities, lots of shopping opportunities from local and national merchants, beautiful, riverfront scenery and parkland, and an incredibly vibrant arts scene.
Richland also has a great sense of history, as home to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation - which was home to part of the Manhattan Project. The city's ties to our nuclear program are why the Richland High School nickname is "Bombers."
The Lewis & Clark expedition arrived in the area in 1805. Settlers arrived about 60 years later and began growing the area. In 1892, Nelson Rich and Howard Amon formed the Benton Land and Water Company. The city became known as "Richland" in 1905, and was incorporated in 1910.
Richland has less than 300 residents in the early 1940s, when the US government purchased a plot of land about half the size of Rhode Island and created the Hanford Nuclear Facility. From that point on, there was no stopping Richland's growth.
In 2007, Richland continues to grow. The State of Washington tabbed Richland's 2007 population as 45,070 residents.
