Richland is located in Benton County in the southeastern part of Washington at the junction of the Yakima and the Columbia Rivers. The census of the year 2000 deemed that the population had grown to 38,708, while the census in 2005 estimated it to be 43,520. Richland is one of the cities of the Tri Cities conglomerate.

Its roots can be traced to the Chemna village at the mouth of the Yakima River known as Columbia Point. Here, the different Indian tribes namely Wanapum, Yakama and Walla Walla caught the salmons in the Yakima River. The Lewis and Clark Expedition toured this region in 1805. Between 1904-1905, W.R. Amon bought about 2,300 acres of real estate here and established a town accepted by the Postal authorities in 1905. Registered in 1906, Richland was incorporated in 1910.

It was agrarian till the US Army bought about 1660 km² along the Columbia River using the land for the Manhattan Project underway at the Hanford Site. Then Richland started becoming a closed city with restricted access to military personnel and the few residential civilian population.  All land and buildings were under government control and housing was allotted to civilian population and a nominal rent was collected. This continued till the end of the war after which the Hanford town was closed down and its people moved to Richland to offset depopulation.

Richland has many historical reminders in the form of the Bombers who are the High School's sports team. Less riling than this is the Hanford High School which has a Falcon as its mascot. Some of the streets constructed post 1958 are named after military personnel like Patton, MacArthur, Sherman and Pershing. Nuclear themes also pervade the city in the form of roads named after personalities and discoveries in this realm. The Columbia River Exhibition of History, Science, and Technology (CREHST) exhibits nuclear technology.

Richland houses the Kadlec Medical Center, which has become a name to reckon with in eastern Washington. An emergent medical district in its proximity includes the Columbia Basin College Medical Training Center.

As of October 2006, the Richland Washington area Beach Overcrossing project is well underway. The existing timber bridge is being replaced with reinforced concrete through-girder bridge. Also being negotiated is a temporary construction easement, with sharing of costs for the project with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF).

The Overcrossing was originally constructed in 1923, to be rebuilt in 1956. At present it is the sole access over railway tracks to 27th Avenue. However, as time has passed, the bridge has weathered, and with the influx of residents to the Richland Wa region, it is vital that reconstruction take place.
