The Richmond Tigers Australian Rules Football Club!

This is about an Australian Rules football club from the inner suburb of Richmond, Melbourne (the capital city of the State of Victoria). It is not about a gridiron team from Virginia in the USA! "Footy" is a tribal passion in Australia, and everyone that is a supporter has a story about how they came to support "their team". It was my grandmother who was so enthusiastic about "The Tigers" (and the legendary "Captain Blood") that I started to watch the replays of their games on television, and eventually became hooked on them, about 50 years ago. Now they're on the way up, and will soon win another premiership!

Richmond Tigers Guernsey

Richmond Football Club, nicknamed The Tigers, is an Australian rules football club that competes in the Australian Football League. Richmond shares healthy rivalries with Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon. After winning five premierships between 1967 and 1980, the club hit the depths in 1990, when a large debt almost forced them to fold. In the last 15 years, Richmond has worked itself back into a strong financial position without enjoying any sustained finals success. But the Tigers boast a mighty history... Wikipedia

Most Goals Season:

Michael Roach - 112 Goals (1980)

Michael Roach

Michael Terrence Roach (born 5 October 1958) is a former Australian rules football player who represented Richmond in the Victorian Football League from 1977 to 1989.

Remembered for his long, accurate kicking for goal and strong marking, for a brief period Roach was the best forward in Australian football. The second of a trio of key forwards recruited by Richmond from Tasmania (the others being Royce Hart and Matthew Richardson), Roach was an enormously popular player whose career did not quite live up to expectation because of injury and constant shuffling of his position by the club...

Doug Strang - 14 Goals (R2, 1931)

Doug Strang

Doug Strang was an Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL between 1931 and 1935 for the Richmond Football Club.

Whilst several injuries restricted his VFL career to just 64 games. In just his second VFL game, his 14 goals kicked against North Melbourne in 1931 still stands to this day as the record for the most goals kicked by a Richmond player in a single game, and the youngest player to kick 10 or more goals in a VFL game, at just 18 years and 300 days old. He was the brother of dual Richmond premiership player Gordon Strang and father of dual Richmond premiership player Geoff Strang... Wikipedia

Richmond Tigers Club Theme Song

Sung to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"...

Richmond Tigers Theme Song Sheet From 1967 Grand Final

Written in 1962 by Jack Malcomson, a cabaret singer, here is the Tiger's club song:

Oh, we're from Tigerland,
A fighting fury, we're from Tigerland,
In any weather you will see us with a grin,
Risking head and shin,
If we're behind then never mind,
We'll fight and fight and win.

For we're from Tigerland,
We'll never weaken 'til the final siren's gone.
Like the Tigers of old,
We're strong and we're bold.
For we're from Tiger yellow and black,
For we're from Tigerland.

Richmond Tigers Homeground is at the MCG

The Tiger's home ground is the Melbourne Cricket Ground. During the home and away season they play most of their home matches there. The MCG can accommodate around 100,000 people, and the Tigers usually draw attendances of at least 50% of that capacity against traditional rivals such as Essendon (the "Bombers"), Collingwood (the "Magpies") and Carlton (the "Blues"). Their training ground is situated at the adjacent Punt Road Oval, only a few hundred metres from the MCG.
