The best ride on Toys - Ever
This lens is all about the priceless years of childhood - with a particular connection to the type of toy so many of us had, or will at least have dreamed of owning - the child's ride on toy. This list, non-exhaustive, and non-exclusive, features go karts, learner bikes, scooters and other wheeled items of pure magic.
The Go Kart
The go kart is the defining child's vehicle. Guaranteed to have sent you into a hedge, a pavement, or an angry neighbour's driveway, the go-kart should remind us of grazed knees, rushing-downhill adrenalin, and bodge-up DIY at its best. The learner bike
The learner bike is a fond but troubled memory. Unlike the go-kart, the learner bike often requires an accompanying adult - and hence less freedom, and hence more frustration at no being able to go without stabilisers as soon as we think we ought to. In truth, of course, stablisers are good too, because they remind us of being tiny. What fun. Kids scooters
Kids scooters are for me a recent invention - ie, when I was a kid, the shiny steel easy-pack-away step-on and scoot type of scooter you see everywhere nowadays was not yet on the market. I would have liked to own one, but I lived in the country, where the roads were rough and the hills were better suited to go-karts. One day, I'll get myself a scooter (perhaps an adult version) and go for a spin! Kids Tricycle
The kids tricycle, or trike, is the best of both worlds between stabilisers and the straight two wheel learner bike. Again, I never owned one of these - went straight to a Raleigh Budgie aged 4 (lasted till 10 at least) Other Ride on Toys
My strongest memory of ride on toys comes from a big brown dog with wheels for paws that I owned aged two. We lived on a farm at the time, and I remember one day my father ran it over with his tractor. I never saw the dog again - but I remember sitting on it to this day. Your first ride on toy should be an intrinsic part of every child's life.">
