Generational Differences Exist in Leadership

As Baby boomers are nearing retirement, riffs in leadership have surfaced in the nonprofit arenas, just as they have in corporate America. The entire $1 trillion dollar nonprofit sector - from art museums to homeless shelters - is bracing for a difficult ride through the shift in the workplace that is beginning now as boomers try to step down.

Many executive directors have stated that they feel a deep concern for the organizations and do not want to cause suffering for the clients in the transitions that will be taking place in the near future. Most of them have been with these organizations from their inception, as founders, or nearly 20 years or more. There is no one that possesses the expertise in strategic planning and fundraising, who is willing or qualified to fill the shoes of these dedicated professionals.

Surveys have shown that 50 to 70 percent of executive directors plan to leave by 2010. Many are founders or longtime leaders and closely identify with their organizations.

"The sector is moving from relative stability to instability at the top," according to a report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which found that two-thirds of 2,200 executive directors surveyed nationally in 2004 wanted to leave by 2009.

This is a sector where money is tight, organizational infrastructures are fragile, and transition is often caught in the mist of peril.

"That has everyone concerned," said Patrick A. Corvington, senior associate of leadership development at the foundation and the author of the survey.

"If the nonprofit sector becomes destabilized, it has an impact on the communities that are being served," he said. "If nonprofits become destabilized, the kids in after-school programs, the people who use shelters, kids coming out of foster care, the disenfranchised people in society that are served by nonprofit agencies are at risk."

About YaVon

Hi Everyone!   Allow me tell you a little about myself.

I have worked with non-profits for several years helping people. Which is what I like to do. My favorite organizations are those dealing with children, like St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House.  I also worked with UNOS as  a  campaign coordinator and AmeriCorp as a teacher's aide. That was really a fun job.

As the mother of two wonderful children, who have blessed me with four
grands and two grentz(great grands), I am very fortunate. For 22
wonderful years I have been married to a wonderful individual, again
very fortunate. We still behave as if we just meet one another.

After working in the business  arena for the past several years and upon retiring, I decided to continue working from home.  Since I have changed my career interest to Internet Marketing, my Grant Writing and research has been on a volunteer basis.  I have been very much interested in how others are using the Internet to raise funds for these organizations and enjoy contributing what I have learned.

I now work for my home office, doing what I can to help raise money to help nonprofits run their programs.  Writing grants is not difficult to do, it is intimidating because you have to make sure that you follow instructions to the letter. No cutting corners, and you definitely have to meet the deadlines. But it is worth the time and effort that it takes to get the proposals submitted. Especially, once you see the finished product and the happiness that these funds will bring to families, their children and the community.

I spend many hours a day using the Internet to find the information I need to submit grant proposals, advertise and market my sites and find information I need to submit press releases for my company. Best3Concepts was created in 1998 on a part time bases initially. I wanted to test the waters and make sure this was what I wanted to do with my time. I had no idea I would like it so much that I would soon be doing this full time, or shall I say all of the time.  I love working on my projects and I spend quite a bit of time on the Net. Now that we have Squidoo, I will be spending more time here.
