Auto Insurance
I've came across so many individuals over the years who carry the state minimums. I ask them why and you know what they tell me? Because it's the law to have insurance. Are you serious? Why even bother having insurance if you are not going to spend a few extra dollars to be properly covered. If you don't believe in insurance then why not just buy insurance for a month to renew your car registration then cancel it? Many people also have the state minimums because that is what their insurance broker sold them. Now the Insurance Agent should know better. I'm sure they themselves are properly covered but they would risk your family's financial future just to make a quick sale. This is why you need to take charge of your own insurance. Become educated on the very basics and shop around and interview several insurance agents. There are honest ones out there!
Let me give you a few suggestions to help you with your auto insurance search.
Am I Properly Covered?
1. Do you want your car fixed in the event of an accident? If you do, then you need to have collision coverage, not just liability insurance. This coverage usually has a deductible attached to it. The most common now is a $500 deductible. Be careful of a broker that gives you a very low cost because it might not include collision or comprehensive coverage.2. Don't get the state minimums, especially in California. Did you know that in many states besides California the state minimum is 25/50/25? In California the state minimum is 15/30/5. What this means is as follows:
-The First Number is Bodily Injury Per Person in Thousands. So in California that is $15,000 to cover one person's injuries.
-The Second Number is Bodily Injury Per Occurrence, also in Thousands. So in CA that would be $30,000 per accident.
-The Third Number is Property Damage. Did you notice that in California this number is only $5,000?
How many cars driving on the road today are only worth $5,000? Would you save the average car is more like $25,000? That just so happens to be the state minimum in most other states. What if you hit a BMW or a Mercedes? Those cars usually start at $50,000. As for the Bodily Injury Portion, how much does the average hospital stay cost today? Well it depends on the severity of your injuries. If you are in the hospital for a week you can almost be assured your bill will be at least $50,000. Do you have Health Insurance? So the $15,000 state minimum in California would not cover someone in a car crash if the injuries were more than just a strained neck or back.
3. Uninsured Motorist coverage. How many people do you know that drive without insurance for whatever reason? If you don't have this coverage and you are hit by an Uninsured Motorist then your insurance will take a hit. This coverage is usually not expensive but I personally have been hit by an Uninsured Motorist and have used this coverage. It's great because I was in college at the time and I couldn't afford my $500 deductible to fix my car.
4. Towing. Do you need this? If you have AAA, then you don't. Although this coverage on your auto insurance can often be much cheaper than AAA. I personally use this coverage the most. I use it when I have a flat tire, run out of gas, or the car just breaks down. Very affordable coverage that is used often.
