What can be done for these numerous people who fight daily to block out the constant buzzing, popping, whooshing, clanging or whistling noises they hear in their ears and head? Is there ear ringing medication available to help these people cure or control this sometimes overwhelming dilemma? Unfortunately there is no real cure for ear ringing or tinnitus. Because damage done to the inner ear is irreversible and tinnitus is usually a result of ear damage, there is nothing available in the way of ear ringing medication to correct the problem permanently. However, these internal noises generally appear because of another problem such as ear infections. Treating the ear infection often alleviates the noise problem, thus acting partly as an ear ringing medication.
There have been drugs prescribed as ear ringing medication. There has also been some success in people using these medications. Over the years there's been many drugs tried on patients to relieve the tormenting tinnitus. Some success has been seen in patients using amitriptyline and nortriptyline, both tricyclic antidepressants. Although these drugs have displayed some improvements when used as ear ringing medication, many patients are bothered by their side effects such as blurred vision, constipation and dry mouth.
Other drugs that have been tried in clinical studies are gabapentin (neurontin) and acamprosate (campral). Gabapentin is a drug used to treat migranes and acamprostate is used to treat alcoholism.
When used as an ear ringing medication, both of these drugs have shown success in relieving tinnitus in some patients.
While there hasn't been an ear ringing medication found to treat all patients with tinnitus, ongoing studies are being done to learn more about this bothersome problem.
A medication may work for one tinnitus patient and may not work for another. Everyone who experiences ear ringing does so in varying degrees.
The best way to find an effective ear ringing medication is to find the root cause of the internal noises. In many cases, once the source of the tinnitus is under control, the severity of the ear ringing is lessoned and in some cases it can be eliminated all together.
