Carnival in Rio de Janeiro has to be one of the most spectacular shows on Earth. Rio carnival, or carnaval as the Potugese speaking locals call it, is particularly known for the huge parades which take place in the Sambadrome, but there are also balls held in the Copacabana Palace and parties on the beach. Street festivals, away from the main carnival parade at the Sambadrome, are very common during carnival and crowded with the Rio de Janeiro locals.

The Sambodrome
Professor Darcy Ribeiro Parade Grounds
The Sambodrome is where the big Samba School parades occur during Carnival, it is a purpose-built, concrete structure along both sides of Av. Marquês de Sapucaí, ending at Apotheosis Square.

Samba Schools
Escolas de Samba
The samba schools are at the heart of Carnaval. They function as social clubs for specific communities, devoting their year to the big Samba Parade. Each samba school has a large meeting hall where they organize the coming event, with musicians, dancers, costume designers and float builders.
Throughout the preceding year, each school will meet at their hall to rehearse the band and dancers, run competitions to chose their Samba Queen and undertake the massive administrative task of assembling everything for their show.
Members of the public can pay to purchase a costume and join in a Samba School's Carnaval parade.
