One of the first Hispanic-American SEX goddesses of 1940s Hollywood Golden Age!

To me, Rita Hayworth was THE leading sex symbol of the 1940s ... although when thinking of sex symbols of the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, one typically thought of the blonde bombshells such as Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Mamie Van Doren, Carroll Baker, and Joey Heatherton.

She stood out from the typical blonde bombshell in that she was a striking auburn-haired American actress of Spanish and Anglo-Irish descent.  To think of Rita Hayworth in her heydey in the 1940s, is to think of a similar "sex goddess" Raquel Welch who came into her heydey in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, I can think of no other actress that tops the aura of Rita Hayworth! Can you???

Did you know?

There was prejudice against Hispanic actors throughout the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. It was not until later that Hayworth became to be regarded as one of the first Hispanic-American "sex goddesses" of "Golden Age" Hollywood.

Quite ironically, she was shy and reclusive, being the antithesis of the characters she played. She once remarked "Men go to bed with Gilda, but they wake up with me."

Her close friend for many years was Glenn Ford, her co-star in a number of films such as the one pictured here.

Rita Hayworth at a glance

Rita Hayworth (October 17, 1918 - May 14, 1987), was an American actress who rose to stardom in the 1940s as the era's leading sex symbol. She was known as "The Love Goddess", and was celebrated as an expert dancer and great beauty.

Orson Welles, husband #2, at a glance

George Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 ? October 10, 1985) was an Academy Award-winning American director, writer, actor and producer for film, stage, radio and television. Welles first gained wide notoriety for his October 30, 1938, radio broadcast of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. Adapted to sound like a contemporary news broadcast, it caused a number of listeners to panic. In the mid-1930s, his New York theatre adaptations of an all-black voodoo Macbeth and a contemporary allegorical Julius Caesar became legendary. Welles was also an accomplished magician, starring in troop variety spectacles in the war years. During this period he became a serious political activist and commentator through journalism, radio and public appearances closely associated with Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1941, he co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in Citizen Kane, often chosen in polls of film critics as the greatest film ever made. The rest of his career was often obstructed by lack of funds, incompetent studio interference and other unfortunate occurrences, both during exile in Europe and brief returns to Hollywood. Despite these difficulties Othello won the 1952 Grand Prix du Festival International du Film at the Cannes Film Festival and Touch of Evil won the top prize at the Brussels World Fair, while Welles himself considered The Trial and Chimes at Midnight to be the best of his efforts.

Although Welles remained on the margins of the major studios as a director/producer, his larger-than-life personality made him a bankable actor. In his later years he struggled against a Hollywood system that refused to finance his independent film projects, making a living largely through acting, commercials, and voice-over work. Welles received a 1975 American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement award, the third person to do so after John Ford and James Cagney. Critical appreciation for Welles has increased since his death. He is now widely acknowledged as one of the most important dramatic artists of the 20th century: in 2002 he was voted as the greatest film director of all time in the British Film Institute's poll of Top Ten Directors.[http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/topten/poll/directors-directors.html BFI | Sight & Sound |Top Ten Poll 2002 - The Directors' Top Ten Directors][http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/topten/poll/critics-directors.html BFI | Sight & Sound |Top Ten Poll 2002 - The Critics' Top Ten Directors]

Prince Aly Khan, husband #3, at a glance

Prince Ali Solomone Aga Khan (June 13, 1911 ? May 12, 1960), known as Aly Khan, was a vice president of the United Nations General Assembly representing Pakistan, for which he served as U.N. ambassador (1958-1960). Best known however as a racehorse owner and jockey, he was a son of Aga Khan III, the head of the Ismaili Muslims, and the father of Aga Khan IV.

His first name was typically spelled Aly in the popular press. The titles of prince and princess, which are claimed by children of the Aga Khan by virtue of their descent from Shah Fath Ali Shah of the Persian Qajar dynasty, were recognized as courtesy titles by the British government in 1938.Anne Edwards, "Throne of Gold: The Lives of the Aga Khans", NY: William Morrow, 1996 (ISBN 0-00-215196-0)

Dick Haymes, husband #4, at a glance

Dick Haymes (September 13, 1916 - March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.

He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.

He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.

Haymes was married six times and had six children. His more notable marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949), Rita Hayworth (1953-1955) and Fran Jeffries (1958-1964). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin

He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 63.

James Hill, husband #5, at a glance

James Hill (August 1, 1916 - January 11, 2001) was a film producer in 1950s and 1960s Hollywood, where he often worked with Burt Lancaster, being part of the "Hecht-Hill-Lancaster" production company with Lancaster and Harold Hecht. However he is probably best known for being the fifth (and final) husband of icon Rita Hayworth from 1958 to 1961.

He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Like Ms. Hayworth, he was a victim of Alzheimer's disease. He died in Santa Monica, California.

Yasmin Aga Khan, her daughter, at a glance

She is the second child of Rita Hayworth, the American movie actress, and her third husband, Prince Aly Khan, a vice president of the United Nations General Assembly representing Pakistan, for which he served as U.N. ambassador.
