A tale of death, deception and the paranormal

Elizabeth Cunningham watched her parents applaud and smile as she graduated college.  Two months later she watched their caskets being lowered into the ground.

Why had their new car plunged into a ravine?  Why had her father recently updated his Will, adding a strange postscript that directed her to move to the city?

The codicil includes a note saying she will, "find the truth".

Liz discovers nothing she was certain of is true.  Her family was not the strong, loyal unit she thought she knew.  Both of her best friends have been hiding things from her.  A respected businessman may be involved in nefarious activities, and planning to destroy her business strategy.  Dirty politics, the CIA, and giant corporate interests could end her dreams and put her life and the lives of her friends and family in danger.

Worst of all, her parents' deaths may not have been an accident.

Her beliefs will be assaulted even more when she has an encounter with a ghost, a mysterious Tarot reading, and discovers her father's connections to the paranormal.

Books and Random Thoughts
River of Possibilities is a fascinating mystery novel in which a down-to-earth Missouri girl learns the truth about her past, with some help from paranormal phenomenon. When the story opens, Liz Cunningham, a recent college graduate, is dealing with a personal tragedy. Her parents were killed in a car accident only the week before. Her brother had inherited the family ranch, while Liz inherited an old brownstone building in nearby Kansas City, with specific instructions to move into the building and "find the truth." Her brother had told her she should pack up and move out right away, which seems rather harsh to me, even if it was what their parents wanted. I mean, what would have been wrong with waiting a few weeks before leaving the ranch? So anyway, Liz's new home is an apartment above a shop that sells books on the paranormal. Ever so slightly creepy, though the building itself is in great shape. Just to add to the creepiness, the store had been the scene of a murder. The manager had been killed during a robbery. Fortunately, her two best friends, Grace and Kathy, come to visit to keep her company. They question the origin of the psychedelic paint job of Liz's new apartment. Liz tells them that a "gypsy" woman had lived there a long time ago, and she had painted the place. Oh yeah, it turns out that this woman was dead as well, though the circumstances surrounding her death were unclear. Some strange things happen in the bookstore, scaring Liz and her friends to death. Things like books being rearranged even when they know no one else was in there, strange apparitions, that sort of thing. On the plus side, the son of the owner of the Italian restaurant next door is hot. In her search for whatever truth her father had wanted her to uncover, Liz and her friends search the attic above her apartment. While they are searching, Liz hears from the investigator for the accident that caused her parents' deaths. He tells her that there is something suspicious about the accident; that someone might have done something to her parents' car. The question, of course, is who would want to do such a thing. There are quite a few possibilities. Her father had once been in the CIA and was apparently still working on some sort of project having to do with ESP. Had he made an enemy through his cloak-and-dagger activities? Then there's Carlo, the Italian restaurant owner who had been very hostile when Liz's father refused to sell him the brownstone. Even Liz's own brother, who insisted that their parents' will be read the day after their deaths and then told Liz to hurry up and move out of the house has raised her suspicions. Just to add to everything else, Liz learns for the first time that her father didn't place a premium on fidelity to her mother. It's quite a lot for Liz to absorb. Nothing is like she thought it was. Even her two best friends have been keeping secrets from her, as a Tarot reading given by Millie, the woman who owns the second-hand clothing store by Liz's brownstone, suggests. Somehow Liz needs to uncover the secrets of her past and the people around her without endangering her own life. This is an enjoyable book--fast-paced, engaging, and full of intrigue. I'm not exactly sure why Liz's father would have wanted to learn any truths about him that she didn't already know, since the things she hadn't known weren't exactly flattering. I suppose he wasn't talking about the infidelities though, and of course he hadn't expected to die when he did. He may have thought he'd be further along with his project and wanted Liz to continue with it in some way. This original premise doesn't really matter that much, though. It's just a really good story, especially if you are interested in ESP.

Editor Review

This book snared me and kept me reading until the very last page. While the CIA and dirty politics concept isn't new, Marti handled it well, giving the plot plenty of twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing as to whodunit. The paranormal aspects gave this mystery a unique flavor, revealing some very painful aspects of Liz's family. Highly recommended.
