R.J. Umberger was drafted in the first round, 16th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. After signing in Philadelphia in the summer of 2004, he made his NHL debut with the Flyers on Oct. 30, 2005 in a 5-3 win over the Senators. As a pro rookie in 2004-05, he led the American League's Philadelphia Phantoms with 44 assists and 65 points. In the playoffs, he helped the Phantoms win the Calder Cup championship. At the college level, he played three seasons at the University of Ohio. He was the CCHA Rookie of the Year in 2000-01. Before enrolling in college, he played two seasons for the United States Development Program.
