Meet Roderick MacKenzie

Have you ever been stuck in a job that just wasn't cutting it? Just a few years ago I was in that situation. If past experience in asking that question is any indication, 90% of you probably are stuck there right now.

Many of us are overworked and underpaid with a boss that's always on our backs and someone else scheduling what we must do with the majority of our time. We're told when we can take vacation, when we can eat lunch, and when we can spend time with our families.

I was a government employed physiotherapist (physical therapist) at a community health centre not long ago. Luckily, I had a great supervisor at the time and the actual work wasn't that bad.

However, it wasn't long before I was wondering why I had topped my pay scale after only four years on the job. I didn't like making my schedule around my work hours and I wasn't making the kind of money that would really allow me to get ahead and build any kind of wealth...so I decided to make a change.

I figured if I started my own business I would have a lot more control of my time and potential to make more money. I studied to become a pedorthist (assessing and fitting for foot orthotics and specialty shoes) and started my own professional practice.

This was much better. I could set my own schedule and take days off or book appointments around other important things going on in my life. Being in control of my time was a great step in the right direction. However, I soon discovered I had really just traded one job for another, only this time I was both boss and employee.

I had more control of my time, but also had the headaches of an owner and still had to put in the work hours of an employee. I was still trading my time for dollars and if I wanted more dollars I would have to trade more time...Not a trade I was willing to make.

That is when I started really searching for a way to leverage my time. Robert Kiyosaki's book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad gives an excellent description of what it means to be a true business owner vs. a self-employed individual. It will open your eyes to a myriad of possibilities. The E-Myth Revisited is also an eye-opening book for creating a profitable and lasting business the right way. There is a link in 'My Library' below.

Once my mind was opened to bigger and better things, I started looking for something different that would suit my needs. Something where I could leverage my time through systems or others to make it work harder for me. I found those systems on the internet and started my third career.

I studied hard in my professional career, so I didn't want to give up my pedorthic practice completely. I sold 75% of it and still work one or two days per week at the clinic, but I work it on my terms, knowing that my online marketing is working for me while I'm there.

My new mission is to help others learn the skills necessary to take control of their lives and their finances through education and training that will enable them to work independently while managing their wealth, enabling them to achieve their dreams.

I will be fullfilling my own dreams as well along the way. That is the story of my 'Journey From Employee to Business Owner' in a nutshell.

I did lots of research when looking for the best systems available to enable me to work from my computer at home. I have included some links to some of the best training available in the 'link' section below.

I wish all of you the joys of being your own boss and running your own business and I'm happy to help anyone who is ready to get there. It's hard work, but the rewards certainly make it all worthwhile!

When meeting someone new you don't just ask them about their work, so I guess I'll tell you a tiny bit about my life outside of work as well.

I've been married to a beautiful gal for 11 years now, but it seems like a lot less than that. I have a miniature Schnauzer, play lots of sports, and I'm involved in my church. My wife and I love to travel around the world (check out the slideshow on this page). I like to hike, and read whatever I can get my hands on.

That's me. The most exciting thing going on with me right now is building my business...and a pending trip to Costa Rica to check out an investment opportunity that was presented at my last company conference. Property in the mountains of Costa Rica overlooking the ocean... sounds just about right to me :)
