Road Schoolers - Families Living in Motion

Learn more about families who live in RV's. Most of these families are unschoolers and a few are homeschoolers. Surely I'm not the only mom who harbors a secret fantasy to get rid of everything I own and hit the open road. Last week we took a 75 hour road trip, and it was so much fun. Living on the road seems like such an awesome experience. I can't wait to share it with my kids. My 16 yr old, she's not hip to the idea just yet.

The Fictitious Wright Family

The Wrights are an unschooling family that live in an RV and travel the United States. In the first book, Wright on Time: Arizona: Book 1the family tours Arizona. On the Wright On Time Books website, Lisa shares the stories of real road schooling families.

The book is the first in a 50 book series inspired by Bentley's family's experience RVing as unschoolers. Her children and husband contributed to the finished project. They're currently not road schoolers, but living in Arizona working feverishly on the rest of the books in the series.

Show us the World

The Showalter Family is RVing across the USA

The Showalter Family shares their adventures at Show us the World as well as with thousands of schoolchildren through the Reach the World program that brings traveler's stories into the classroom.

The Showalter's Blogspot bio states:
Someday is NOW! We decided not to wait until we retire to travel, but to do it today so we could enjoy the experience as a family. We loaded up our little castle and began our journey. We wanted less of some things in our life. We wanted more of other things in our life. The chronicles of our journey as we live full time on the road and what we learn through it.

Their family was also featured in the Wright on time 20 Questions for Road Schoolers - Showalters Family

Driven to Educate

The Taylor Family's year-Long Trip Across the USA

The Taylor family decided to spend a year on the road. Mom was working as an air traffic controller and was struck with an illness that left her wondering "What if I were dying?" She decided that she most wanted to see the country with her children and set off in an RV for exactly one year.

On their website, Driven to Educate, the Taylors share their experiences in each state. The trip is over, they came home in march of 2009, but the website is rich with roadschooling stories.

The Five Baehrs

On the road with three kids

In July of 2008, the Baehr Family sold everything and hit the road.

From their website:

Hello! We're the Baehr family. Dad, John. Mom, Tricia. Twins, Birke and Brandt and Daughter, Bailey. We looked at our life and thought about what was working in synchonicity with the Universe and what was not. John was traveling frequently with his job and Tricia found herself at home with three active kids, a franchise business and not much time for anything else. What mattered to us was spending time together, learning new things, developing relationships with the earth and other people and experiences. What did not matter much was a house and yard in the suburbs and all of the maintenance required for such house. So we looked at some alternative options for living and with 3 years of research and planning we have decided to become a "Family on the Road" ! Check our website, 5 Bears go USA, regularly for updates, blogs, pictures and videos of all of our adventures.

Road Schooling Rock Stars

From a 3300 Square foot home to a 330 square foot motorhome

The Nodland Family hit the road ten years ago and created the Road School website as well as RVing with Kids to help share the joy of traveling with other families.

They're currently in a regular house now, having settled down in San Diego. They're one of few families who can say that they've slept in all 50 states.

Bare Naked Family

Consciously Choosing their Dreams

The Bare Naked Family father started out as a corporate suit and decided to hit the road. They traveled for about seven years and now they work for their kids. Literally. Their kids are older now, entrepreneurial and both parents devote their time and energy to the success of the kids' businesses. This, and other things make them one of my very favorite families in the whole wide world. I can't even say anything more about them, you just need to check them out.

Families on the Road

Home is Where you Park It

Families on the Road is a fantastic resource for families who are living on the road, or just drooling over the idea.

One great thing about the Families on the Road site is the directory of families and the communication forums.

Just when I think "I can't do this, I have too many kids to live on the road" I come across the Ticknor Family who went on the road just weeks before their 11th child was born.

Hmmm, so maybe we can go on the road. We've tossed the idea around for years.
