The Road to Giant Squidom

Learn-as-You Go in Squidoo

I didn't set out to become a Giant Squid at Squidoo. To tell you the truth, I thought it sounded kind of silly. Why would an adult want to be called a Giant Squid, anyway?

At first I dismissed the idea, turning my attention towards just visiting a few lenses. I liked that Squidoo had a great search engine. I could arrive at a list of interesting topics within seconds. But after viewing a lens about landscaping, a good idea struck, like a butterfly fluttering across my mind's eye. I bet nobody has ever made a lens like that, I thought.

If you're visiting Squidoo with the idea of making your first lens, Welcome. I clearly remember my first taste of Squidoo--the first bite of a sweet, juicy apple. Once I created a lens, it seemed only natural to create another...and another...and another.

If I can reach the goal of Giant Squid within 159 days, so can you. Some have accomplished that number even sooner!

Learn from the Giants

It's best to learn the basics of Squidooing before you begin. Otherwise it might feel too frustrating and might either give up or leave Squidoo with the wrong impression of it.

We're fortunate that experienced lensmasters have given their time and expertise to create free tutorials on how to use modules, why images are important, and how to create a lens that's the right balance of text and graphics. I learned the most from Giant Squids, which led to a lens I created early on, Lost in Squidoo: Hot Tips for Newbies I valued their experience because their lenses reflected a lot of work and maintenance.

A short while later, I wanted to credit Giants who had captured my attention in my early days at Squidoo. Squidoo WHO? Learn from Successful Lensmasters was hatched.

159 Days

That's how long it took me between the time I published my first lens, to the day I received my welcome into the new class of Giant Squids. By then I was already forging ahead, working on my 57th lens. That was just last week. (I wrote about it in Seedplanter's Journal, my Squidoo blog.) This week, I completed #60, and have 4 WIP (work-in-progress), as well.

I'd read about someone who created fifty lenses in 40 days, and another in 60 days. But I knew that with my other commitments that wouldn't work for me. I needed to pace myself and not become so obsessed that my other work suffered. I did think about my next lens idea a lot--maybe too much-- (read Blame it on Squidoo, but never to the point of camping out at my computer. Good coffee and a steady stream of ideas kept me going.

But how did I get started? What did I do first? Here's the short version:

1. First I registered at Squidoo. It required me to choose the ID I'd be using as a lensmaster. I chose Seedplanter, and it has proven to be a good fit.

2. I already knew what I wanted my first lens to be about. I'd searched for a similar topic, and sure enough--apparently nobody else had been crazy enough to take a shovel and dig up their whole backyard by hand, then write about it. Backyard Makeover: Before and After was my very first lens, published it on August 7, 2008.

3. I then went on to create 49 additional lenses, and made the December 31st deadline to be considered as a Giant Squid.

Where Are the Good Ideas?

In your brain, that's where.

If you feel creatively blocked, try sitting quietly with a pen and paper for a few minutes every day. Write whatever comes to mind. List topics that interest you, and topics you know little about. Watch your curiosity grow as your list expands. Check out Steal This Idea for a month-by-month schedule of possible lens ideas.

If you're still blocked, maybe the following suggestions will help.

1. What was your childhood like? If it was rough, what have you learned from it? If it was happy, what qualities have you carried into adulthood with you? I created The Gift of Honesty and The Gift of Kindness because those were two values I learned early in life.)

2. Who's the most influential person you've ever met? I'm not talking famous or powerful...but influential in how they affected you personally.

3. What would you be doing today if money were not a factor?

4. If you had five minutes with a P.A. system to the world, what would you say?

5. Have you ever eaten an insect?

6. Have you tasted homelessness or extreme poverty?

7. What do you hope your children will remember most about you?

8. Do you have a secret talent nobody knows about? Why are you waiting to share it?

9. How often do you stop everything and spend some quiet time alone?

10. Do you believe in God? Why or why not?

11. Do you enjoy public speaking, or are you among those who rate it right up there with cancer on their list of fears?

12. Are you a pet lover or one who has never owned a pet?

13. What's the oddest job you've ever held?

14. Do you have any heroes?

15. What trendy term are you tired of hearing?

16. Do you like your name?

17. If you had to choose a last meal, what would you order?

18. If someone offered you an all-expenses-paid vacation for one year, where would you go?

19. What's the most sentimental item you have in your home?

20. Have you ever experienced a miracle?

I started late September and I am up to 43 lenses built. I am working towards the goal. I do get stumped. I see a lot of lenses then think to myself why didn't I think of that?

Glad you liked the Good Ideas section. Sometimes it just helps to see a list of brainstorming ideas to trigger a new idea. I have reams of notebooks full of ideas I noted during brainstorming or mindmapping sessions. Not enough life to use them all!

What a great lens. I esp. love the "Where Are the Good Ideas?" section. (It gave me some good ideas!)

I didn't set out to be a Giant either, in fact the first time I found out about it, was the day I got an email telling me I was one of the 70 people picked back when they did the first round in Sept '07. I had no idea what they were talking about or what a Giant Squid was! It's been great fun being a Giant though, cause I've gotten to test out templates and such things days (or even weeks) before the rest of Squidoo got to try them.

All I can say is: I LOVE SQUIDOO!
