Not Much Has Changed

Here's a vintage picture of a Nazi era roadblock in Denmark. This one was taken around 1940. The Nazis didn't bother to pretend that these were just "checkpoints". They just called them "roadblocks", which is what they were, and are today.

Here in America these intrusions were endorsed by the US Supreme Court in a 6 to 3 decision in the case of Michigan Dept. of State Police v. Sitz, 496 U.S. 444 (1990), a case involving the constitutionality of police DWI roadblocks. The majority opinion in Sit held that DWI roadblocks do not necessarily offend the federal constitution. In recent years excessive federal money has poured into many states to build and operate DWI roadblocks, which are becoming a sad part of everyday life in many states.
