Roatan
is famous for its scuba diving and being located near the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea and second largest in the world. Only Australia's Great Barrier Reef is larger.
Both
Spanish and a form of English are spoken here. The first permanent English settlers in Roatan and Northern Honduras probably came from the Cayman Islands and Jamaica in the early 1800's after slavery was abolished.
The
English speaking population is known by the term Caracol. The term Caracol (conch or snail) presently refers to all people born in the Bay Islands (of which Roatan is one).
Tourism
is its most important economic sector, though fishing is also an important source of income for islanders. It has become a major stop on the Western Caribbean cruise routes in recent years.

Brief Description Of Roatan, Island
Roatán, located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja (), is the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands. The island was formerly known as Ruatan and Rattan. It is approximately long, and less than wide at its widest point.
Category: Image - :Roatan.westend.jpg|left|thumb|250px|West End of Roatan looking eastward
The island consists of two municipalities (out of a total of four in the department):
Jose Santos Guardiola in the east (named for the former president of Honduras) and Roatán (also including the Cayos Cochinos) further south in the west. The most populous town of the island is Coxen Hole, capital of Roatán municipality, located in the southwest. Other important towns include French Harbour, West End, and Oak Ridge, the capital of Jose Santos Guardiola municipality.
The easternmost quarter of the island is separated by a convoluted channel through the mangroves that is 15 meters wide on the average. This section is called Helene, or Santa Elena in Spanish. Satellite islands at the eastern end are Morat, Barbaretta, Pigeon Cay, and Barefoot Cay. Known as Burial Key until 2001, Barefoot Cay now is privately owned and houses a luxury resort popular with celebrities.
Located near the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea (second largest worldwide after Australia's Great Barrier Reef), Roatán has become an important cruise ship and scuba diving destination in Honduras. Tourism is its most important economic sector, though fishing is also an important source of income for islanders.

How Do You Like The New Look?
Every time I do a new Caribbean Destination lens, I try to add some additional glitz and glamour to it. Sometimes I succeed. Sometimes I don't. I am even going back to add upgraded touches to the previously published lens. In this lens, I introduced a new effect, that of a three-dimensional feel. This is done by using certain combinations of color which give the effect of depth. Let me know if you like this effect. I'd love to hear from you.

- Tony, thanks for dropping by. I realize that this effect can be hard on some people. I have generally limited its use to 2 lenses, this one and one I did specifically on using 3-D effects such as this one. This effect probably has limited usefulness, but I like to do things differently once in a while.

- Very nice lens and very interesting effect. 5***** Unfortunately the red doesn't give enough contrast for me so I can't read it properly - my eyes aren't as good as they once were. I was supposed to visit Roatan some years ago when I installed a computer system for a client in San Pedro Sula (Honduras), but the dates got changed and we couldn't go the the reef. I did get to visit the Mayan ruins at Copan though, very different but equally impressive.
